HP raises ranking on Greenpeace Cool IT Leaderboard

HP is in the fourth spot in Version 6 of the Greenpeace Cool IT rankings, up from 10th position last year. This success demonstrates the organization’s commitment to “enabling a modern, renewable-powered energy infrastructure”, putting HP on a par with Sprint IT and Indian electronics manufacturer Wipro (who all tied for the fourth position with 43 points) and trailing only Google, Cisco (tied first place with 58 points), Ericsson (second place with 51 points), and Fujitsu (third place with 44 points). Other big names placed lower in the rankings – IBM (with 35 points), Dell (with 27 points) – while Apple chose not to participate.

Now in its sixth year, the Cool IT Leaderboard was launched in 2009 by Greenpeace to identify the global IT companies driving change in the energy sector. It considers contributions in three specific areas: economy-wide technological climate solutions, reduction of own global warming emissions, and engagement in political advocacy and policy support.

This year, HP was recognized for its increased advocacy effort – specifically for signing onto a letter (urging US Congressional leadership to extend wind tax credit) alongside Sprint and Microsoft – and for its product efficiency, and measurement of supply-chain emissions. The Greenpeace investigation also helpfully identified areas for improvement, and urged HP to use environmental and renewable energy performance goals to guide future growth.

The Next Big Step: HP Catalyst Academy to Accelerate STEMx Professional Development

Teaching and learning the STEMx subjects (science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and complementing 21st-century skills) got a much-needed boost on April 15th, when the HP Catalyst Initiative took its next big step to launch the new HP Catalyst Academy. The Initiative has revealed that, although countries are prioritizing better quality STEMx education, traditional models of professional development are failing to keep pace with the demand.

The new HP Catalyst Academy provides a fresh approach to accelerate STEMx professional development. It is a source of free and powerful learning experiences that inspire and transform teaching practices, accessible online to educators everywhere. And the call has gone out for HP Catalyst Academy Fellows – STEMx trailblazers prepared to support this global transformation. Proposals are due by July 8th; visit www.hp.com/go/hpcatalystacademy for grant application details.

The launch was announced to more than 120 leading educators, education experts, and policy leaders at the 2013 HP Catalyst Summit in São Paulo, Brazil, a country that’s currently demonstrating powerful activism in education. This, the third annual Catalyst Summit, coincided with Brazil’s SINTED education technology exhibition, HP Brazil’s announcement of a comprehensive IT education solutions portfolio and the HP Institute professional certification program, and the recent publication of the OECD Catalyst report – the first-ever independent review of Catalyst achievements to date.

IT Skills - The Never-Ending Challenge

Technology never stops innovating. Every few months there seems to be a new hot IT trend. As a result, IT professionals are struggling to “stay current” in their field and many companies are unable to source the expertise necessary to capitalize on new technology.

The challenges of today’s IT-skills shortage come as no secret to those of us in the field. However, I think it’s time to revisit this ever-relevant issue. As a long-time member of HP’s user community, Connect’s, leadership team and an HP technology user, I have had an interesting lens through which I see technology trends.

My conversations with engineers, business executives, IT users and developers alike show that there are several parallel shifts in technology that make finding and keeping good IT talent very challenging. In this article from Inc. magazine on “The 5 Hardest Jobs to Fill in 2013,” all positions relate to up and coming technology like mobile, big data and cloud.

We make it our priority at Connect to help members stay abreast of the latest technology and grow their careers through special interest groups and educational opportunities.

Our partnership with HP ExpertONE has strengthened deeply in the last few years. In fact, I recently spoke with Susan Underhill, HP ExpertOne Vice President, who shared with me compelling new IDC research on IT skills. In their January 2013 paper, Benefits of Training and Certification, IDCshows that IT teams with certified skills spend less time on routine operations and “break/fix” activities – nearly 30% less time in key areas such as data backup and recovery. That leaves more time for innovation and learning in emerging areas such as mobile, big data and cloud. You can learn more here, or download the report from My ExpertOne.

In addition to working with ExpertOne, Connect is also working closely with HP Networking to offer educational resources and networking opportunities to meet the need for talent in the field, particularly Bring your own Device (BYOD). Connect and HP Networking recently launched the Bring It On Tour 2013 in Austin, Texas and will be heading to Tampa, Miami and Seattle. The Bring It On Tour presents a complete, unified BYOD solution that is simplified, scalable and secure. “These events are small and interactive to give Connect Users information that is new and innovative as well as educational” said Mike Banic, Vice President of Global Marketing at HP Networking.

HP Leads Workstation Industry with Solutions for Creative Professionals

This week at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show, Hewlett Packard is demonstrating its leadership and market expansion in the media and entertainment industry. How you ask? We are deliverying new solutions that drive innovation and performance for some of the world’s most demanding customers.

HP Workstations deliver top performance to creatives in deadline-driven segments of media and entertainment. This includes everything from creating visual effects for the next epic blockbuster film to assisting the Oscar-winning editor who works from his basement.

This week's announcement that HP is working with Fusion-io to integrate the Fusion ioFX memory tier into the award-winning line of HP Z Workstations is the latest example of HP’s commitment to developing innovative solutions and performance improvements specifically for the media and entertainment segment.

“I consider HP one of the best engineering companies in the world, so I’m thrilled to see HP and Fusion-io working together to advance workstation computing architectures,” said Steve Wozniak, chief scientist, Fusion-io. “The Fusion ioFX brings the intelligence of the Fusion-io approach to HP’s incredible workstations, adding even more powerful application performance to the precision engineering HP is known for around the world.”

HP also recently expanded its reach in media and entertainment by collaborating with industry-leading reseller ALT Systems to develop two high-performance game development packages—the ALT Systems Game Developer Edition for Autodesk Users and the ALT Systems Game Developer Edition for Unreal Engine Users.

Leading the Way: HP Enterprise Cloud Services – Mobility

This week, HP Enterprise Services announced a cloud-based management solution that delivers secure anytime, anywhere access to applications and data from any mobile device.

HP Enterprise Cloud Services – Mobility meets the demands of balancing the responsibilities and requirements of IT with the challenges and expectations of users. This new cloud solution is part of the HP Converged Cloud portfolio, which provides enterprises with the essential foundation of technologies and services to confidently build, operate and consume IT services.

“Mobility in the workplace continues to be a key focus and concern for IT executives,” said Pete Karolczak, senior vice president, HP Enterprise Services. “HP Enterprise Cloud Services – Mobility leverages HP’s strong cloud portfolio by providing clients with a mobility service that provides the highest level of user experience and productivity while minimizing risk for IT.”

The new solution provides fast and flexible deployment of tools and services for secure application access, file storage and sharing via multiple mobile platforms and all types of devices, including tablets and mobile phones. IT organizations are provided the tools to set appropriate security policies and the access controls to protect valuable corporate assets, applications and data.

The solution also allows users to download approved enterprise applications from a secure storefront, upload files to support collaboration and synchronize files between the HP cloud infrastructure and any mobile device. Mobile data is encrypted in transit and at rest, covering the device as well as the cloud infrastructure.

HP Celebrates World Health Day

HP celebrates World Health Day with two prestigious awards for the newly announced eHealth Center launched in India in collaboration with the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)

As World Health Day approaches on April 7th, the newly announced cloud-enabled eHealth Center (eHC solution) which was launched in India in collaboration with CSIR has won early kudos. It has received two prestigious awards. In February 2013, the eHC solution won a World CSR Congress award for ‘Best Corporate Social Responsibility Practices’ for societal contribution (addressing the social challenge of equality in healthcare provision). In March 2013, it won one of India’s National Awards in Excellence for ‘Best Use of IT in Healthcare’ for business innovation (demonstrating leadership in using IT to improve healthcare and ultimately drive economic growth).

And there is more good news! The eHC solution has been recently announced as a finalist in the GBC Health Business Action on Health Awards 2013, in the ‘Technology for Health’ category and has been named as Laureate of the Computerworld Honors Program.

The eHC is a cloud-enabled healthcare solution housed in a standard shipping container which can be quickly transported to remote areas of the country by air, rail or land.

Each eHC is equipped with cloud-integrated diagnostic equipment, and a telemedicine studio, laboratory and pharmacy. Paramedics who staff the eHC have access to expert medical advice provided through remote consultation using built-in videoconferencing tools. This is an enormous benefit for isolated locations with no access to skilled doctors.

By increasing the access, quality and efficiency of global health, this unique healthcare solution supports HP’s assertion that – as one of the largest technology companies in the world - by uniting the power of people and technology we can address societal challenges and strengthen communities worldwide.

Cornerstone OnDemand Selects HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage

Hewlett Packard today announced that Cornerstone OnDemand, a global, cloud-based talent management software provider, has selected our 3PAR StoreServ Storage to support future growth and simplify storage management by increasing data center capacity.

By upgrading to HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage, Cornerstone was able to quadruple its data center capacity and performance without increasing infrastructure footprint or energy costs. As a result, subscribers experience consistent application access, even as demand escalates. Additionally, the company achieved faster response times via a 20 percent reduction in latency. This performance gain has significantly diminished risk of downtime and increased Cornerstone’s business continuity by reducing backup time by 90 percent.

“Cornerstone OnDemand needed a storage solution that could seamlessly accommodate the company’s global growth while mitigating data center administration time and complexities,” said Justin Ferris, senior director, Technical Operations, Cornerstone OnDemand. “The level of scalability and performance delivered by HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage enables our business to grow without ongoing hardware upgrades or intensive maintenance to ensure superior customer satisfaction.”

In addition to improving capacity and performance, the HP 3PAR StoreServ P10000 Storage system deployed at Cornerstone has reduced data center management time by 20 hours per week. Systemwide striping, a function of the system’s enterprise-class architecture, automatically writes data across all system resources to increase throughput. As a result, workloads are automatically balanced across all resources, ensuring optimal performance under constantly shifting demands.

HP 3PAR StoreServ also offers high system redundancy, via multiple controllers, allowing Cornerstone to perform maintenance any time without impacting workflow.

Big Data Innovations from HP

Hewlett-Packard is making it more predictable, simple and efficient to work with us. Big Data is one area that we are targeting, especially as mega trends continue to evolve.

Last week, HP Enterprise Services announced a new information management and analytics (IM&A) service designed to help customers rapidly gain increased value from Big Data assets. This will support enterprise efforts to drive new revenue opportunities, improve efficiency, reduce risk and lower costs.

According to global research commissioned by HP (1), more than one out of two business executives reported that their organizations are not equipped with the right solutions to gain insight from Big Data. We have a response: the HP Big Data Discovery Experience.

Our Big Data Discovery Experience simplifies and accelerates the entry path for enterprise customers to unlock the value of their information. The service provides a scalable discovery environment, where partners and customers can explore different technologies to experience insights gleaned from their own data. This week I had the opportunity to participate in my first HP Social Support Summit and meet our volunteer Experts from around the world. For a few days out of the year, HP’s social care and expert community members emerge from their laptops and meet face to face to draw inspiration from one another and build relationships through our common bond of supporting HP customers…38 million and counting. Developing a comprehensive social support community is critical to the ongoing success of HP and delivering on our promise of a world class customer experience. According to NM Insights State of Social Customer Service Report 2012:

• 47% of all social media users have used social care, with usage as high as 59% among 18-24 year olds;

• 71% of those who experience positive social care (i.e., a quick and effective brand response) are likely to recommend that brand to others;

• Nearly 1 in 3 social media users prefer to reach out to a brand for customer service through a social channel compared to the phone;

• 70% of social care users satisfied with their experience are likely to use that form of customer service again. Only 41% who have unsatisfactory experience are apt to try social care again;

• 51% of users actively engage with brand after using social care.

Do these numbers surprise you? They don’t surprise our Experts. Social Support and specifically our HP Expert Community, play an increasingly decisive role in providing a differentiated customer experience.
