Blog courtesy of Joe Gerkman, SUSE Director Global Alliances - HP

In 1992, 4 guys in Nuremberg, Germany started a group to develop software and act as an advisory UNIX group. That group was S.u.S.E., which originally was an acronym for Software und System Entwicklung (Software and System Development). While the name has changed a bit since 1992 (S.u.S.E. -> SuSE -> SUSE), the company they founded has become one of the most used Enterprise Linux distributions in the world. https://www.suse.com/company/

SUSE has always operated with a foundation on open-source, innovation, design, and engineering, and has been a pioneer with many of the advances in Linux and Enterprise Linux over the last 20 years. Examples of some of the SUSE "firsts" include first commercial linux distribution, 2.6 kernel, 3.0 kernel, reiserFS, 64-bit computing, Mainframe, Itanium, PowerPC, ipv6, ofed, virtualization (xen/kvm), 1024 cpu support, 4096 cpu support, large memory support, OpenStack, Open Build Service, SUSE Studio, openQA, etc...and in many cases, they beat competitors to market with these features by 6-24 months.

This week, we are celebrating SUSE's 20th birthday, at SUSE's first user conference, SUSEcon 2012. We had a great party last night to review the 20 years of advances and progress SUSE has made from a small band of idealistic college students to the $200M+ Linux-focused company it is today. SUSE has a growth rate that matches that of the Linux market as a whole and which continues to be very popular with companies like BMW, GM, OfficeDepot, London Stock Exchange, Walmart, Walgreens, Microsoft, Sesame Workshop, Tencent, VMware, Intel, and, of course, HP. We take pride in our approach and our focus on both customers and partners alike...and look forward to the next 20 years.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SUSE_Linux_distributions
