    <description>&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;Guest blog by Ron Noblett, &lt;/em&gt;Vice President, Infrastructure and Storage, HP&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I’m writing from Zurich this week to celebrate a milestone in the evolution of sustainable IT technology. &lt;a href="http://www.greendatacenter.ch/deCH.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;Green Data Center&lt;/a&gt; of Switzerland, together with HP and ABB, has expanded their Zurich West data center to create the world’s most  largest &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HVDC" target="_blank"&gt;high-voltage direct current&lt;/a&gt; (HVDC) data center.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;HVDC has been around in one form or another for more than 100 years, but practical applications for the technology only began to take hold in the 1970’s  DC systems are less complex than AC systems, making fewer power conversions. As a result, DC systems require up to 25 percent less space, and reduces equipment, installation, and real estate and maintenance costs.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The effectiveness of HVDC has not been without controversy. However, HVDC-related technologies have evolved in recent decades, which has spurred more and more organizations to take advantage of its benefits. Especially as data center energy demands increase more than 10 percent annually with nearly six million new servers added around the world every year.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Developing new energy saving technologies is core to HP’s &lt;a href="http://h17007.www1.hp.com/us/en/converged-infrastructure/" target="_blank"&gt;Converged Infrastructure&lt;/a&gt; and ProLiant &lt;a href="http://h17007.www1.hp.com/us/en/whatsnew/proliantgen8/index.aspx" target="_blank"&gt;Gen8&lt;/a&gt; strategies. This commitment to more sustainable IT practices is also lowering data center capital costs, as well as ongoing operations costs and complexity. ABB, one of the world’s leading power and automation technology groups, and HP share the same data center infrastructure collaboration initiatives – including addressing the benefits, myths, and realities of &lt;a href="http://bit.ly/IDRYVL" target="_self"&gt;HVDC&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;For Green Data Center’s &lt;a href="http://uptimeinstitute.com/TierCertification/" target="_blank"&gt;Tier III-certified&lt;/a&gt; data center in Zurich, HP provided the HVDC-enabled IT for this technology showcase, including servers and storage, such as the &lt;a href="http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF06b/12169-3798502-3954626-3954626-3954626-5031436-4350659-4350608.html?dnr=1&amp;amp;jumpid=reg_r1002_usenc-001&amp;amp;lang=en&amp;amp;cc=us" target="_blank"&gt;HP X1800 G2 Network Storage System&lt;/a&gt;&lt;a href="http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/pscmisc/vac/us/en/sm/proliant/proliant-dl.html" target="_blank"&gt;, HP ProLiant DL385&lt;/a&gt; servers, and the &lt;a href="http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/blades/bladesystem/index.html" target="_blank"&gt;HP BladeSystem c3000&lt;/a&gt;.
