Business Transformation Insights: Wrap your applications transformation in a framework

present.jpgThe end of the year is approaching and the holiday season begins. It is time to wrap up those presents, but also time to reflect and wrap up some conclusions from our past efforts. Yes, we’re making a list and checking it twice . . .


My blogs started with a series that talked about creating compelling business cases for mobility, cloud, big data and security. I proposed that there are three reasons why businesses invest: to increase revenue, to reduce cost or risk, and to increase capability to beat competitors. In my next series, I covered a few lessons I have learned from applications transformation projects; lessons which are not found the text books but are learned from experience. There are five themes which emerge relating to business transformation from these blogs:


  • The Journey: recognise that you are taking people on a journey. If people don’t know what is coming, how can they prepare?
  • Engagement: you need to engage people by creating a “story they can believe in” using the right language.
  • Value: to create the story, you need to understand where the value of the change can be found and how people will benefit (the compelling reasons).
  • Leadership: creating an environment where leaders are engaged in the change and own it.
  • Mobilisation: creating an environment where change is recognised as a necessity.

Pulling off a successful business transformation is no mean feat, so it helps if you can wrap it in a framework to give it some structure. Tony’s article mentions the HP Transformation Framework. This framework covers all aspects of the delivery process. Its approach represents capabilities (Value Management, Business Architecture, Technology Architecture, Management of Change and Programme Management & Governance) as deliverables which span the full delivery life cycle. The framework identifies the "what" in terms of deliverables and maps them to processes and methods which describe “how" to create them. Each lesson then adds to the repository of knowledge.

Hi Gary, I think your first point says it all. "It's a Journey". The other 4 points definitely support "The Journey" the users will take. Unfortunately a lot of people think it's just a technology process rather than a people process which is what makes it challenging. I have seen some transformations go really well when the right Business Change Management is used across the transformation. Do it wrong and the whole thing turns really bad.

Having been involved with transformation and transition programs across multiple industries I find the HP Transformation Framework to be the perfect tool to not only “plan the journey”, but to help define the destination.  Being based on the real life experience of some of the best practitioners it helps bring the story to life, and gives me confidence that thorough preparation has been made for the transformational journey.

A journey requires a route map that charts the course of change that people will take. Gary mentioned the HP Transformation Framework. In my experience, the Framework provides an excellent starting point for creating that route map for an IT enabled business transformation.
