The fact that TDWI is devoting a whole conference to the idea of uniting business and IT to develop a common data strategy is a good thing. HP recently conducted a survey with Dimensional Research, in which only 32 percent of companies indicated that their business intelligence solutions meet current business needs. Frequently, we find that this is because the business is not involved in early strategic visioning and strategic planning for business intelligence deployments. Perhaps it’s because the business wasn’t consulted, didn’t want to be involved, or didn’t properly communicate requirements. It could be that business intelligence priorities (from IT) don’t line up with business objectives. In any case, business involvement and executive sponsorship are critical for developing sustainable business intelligence solutions that can enable long-term competitive advantage.
