Do you know which applications you ought to move to the Cloud?  Which ones you ought to service-enable to support mobile services?  Which ones you ought to re-architect to have them better help you in the future?

 

Do you know which ones you ought to retire, or replace?  And with what? Do you know what redundancies or duplications you have, and what to do about them?

 

More importantly, what assumptions are you making about your applications portfolio and your needs, and do you even know you’re making them?  Or what the repercussions from those assumptions might be?  After all, “It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.” (attributed to Mark Twain).

 

In the context of the new style of IT and your applications portfolio, what you don’t know can get you into as much trouble as what you know for sure that ain’t so.  Both can be deadly.  So what can you do about it?

 

It all starts with a serious, in depth, portfolio analysis. An applications rationalization project.  With this in hand, you’ll not only know all the applications you have, but what you want to and need to do with them. In fact, many clients believe that the applications inventory alone is worth the cost of their rationalization initiative.

 

You’ll also know what the dependencies and interactions are between your applications and the data and information sources they’re either reliant upon or contribute to.  You’ll know their total costs (developers, testers, dev/test infrastructure, operations [people and infrastructure], management, licensing etc.).  You’ll know the technology and business risks associated with each.  You’ll also know the business value that they contribute to by understanding the business processes that they support. 

 

With your business strategy and goals in hand, you’ll know which ones you want to keep, which ones need to get better, which ones need to be modernized to support other strategic initiatives, and which ones you ought to get rid of.  Furthermore, you will have the information you need to build a solid business case to move ahead with your own applications transformation initiative.

 

Doing this requires the expertise and skills of a detective … someone equipped to find everything, how they’re connected, and what the costs and value are.  That’s where HP can help; most companies don’t have those skills and tools on hand or the capacity to do it on their own.
