Run apps at flash speed

By:  Daniel Amor, EMEA Lead for Application Modernisation, Hewlett Packard Company

flash.jpgHP introduced new all flash 3PAR storage array claiming to have broken the $2 per GB barrier, which leads us to rethink the way how we build application and the management of data. These new compaction technologies, include HP 3PAR Thin Deduplication and HP 3PAR Thin Clones software, which add to the benefits of existing thin provisioning with zero-block deduplication, that HP says frees up significant space. HP also collaborated with SSD suppliers to extend usable capacity per drive by up to 20 percent by reducing the space typically reserved by media suppliers. Express Indexing allows the array to be scaled to 460 TB of raw storage and more than 1.3 petabytes of equivalent usable capacity.

The system also comes with a guarantee of 99.9999 percent storage uptime and HP offers a five-year warranty on its 480GB, 920GB and 1.92TB HP 3PAR StoreServ SSDs.

So with all this innovation, we need to rethink the way we store information in our applications. Over time, access to the data will be as fast as in memory, but with the additional advantage that during a power outage data will not be lost (which is one of the key disadvantages of in-memory computing). We are seeing that memory types are moving closer together and with the introduction of memristor-based technologies, there will be no difference between RAM, hard disks and other types of memory. All will converge to one, which means that applications don't have to be loaded anymore, there will be no need to open up files and copy them into RAM. The cloud will speed up the whole development of this all-in-one memory environments, so application owners need to adjust the way they build and maintain the applications and the associated data.

Today is again fully packed with interesting presentations on applicatin transformation. Let's have a look here:
