Viva Las Vegas

memristor.jpgDay 3 at HP Discover in Las Vegas is about to be kicked off. The first two days brought a lot of new exciting products and services and we will continue to see this happening today with more announcements and presentations on key topics around application transformation.

HP announced an update of the Vertica Analytics Platform, with speedier queries, improved resource allocation and enhanced SQL-on-Hadoop functionality. The new release, called HP Vertica Dragline, is a key part of its HAVEn Big Data analytics platform, the company said, along with several other components.

"Our goal continues to be maximizing the value of every organization's most strategic asset -- its data," said company exec Colin Mahony in a statement. "HP Vertica Dragline lets organizations store data in a cost-optimized manner, exploring it quickly and effectively using well-known SQL-based tools, and, most importantly, providing the customer insights and operational advantages to everyone with blazing-fast speed, accuracy and security."

To exploit these new features, applications will need to have a better view on how data is organised and understand the capabilities the underlying platform will bring to them. Therefore, when moving towards a new infrastructure platform as Vertica, it is a good time to also review not only the data aspects, but also the applications running on top to get the most out of the platforms below.
