In my first meeting with my financial planner many years back, I was advised that I should continuously monitor my portfolio of investments on a regular basis and make adjustments as needed on a period basis -- depending on their current and projected value. I find that this principle is true not just for personal finances but also for IT professionals when you are dealing with a myriad set of applications within your environment. A barren patch of land outside my hotel at the HP Discover conference reminds me of how the city started many years back. If you were the CIO of Las Vegas at that time, you would have had all the flexibility to evolve this stretch of land into what it is today. Not so today. Welcome to reality. Suddenly, you are faced with a labyrinth of casinos and other supporting infrastructure that takes up every inch of space -- except for the accidental patch of barren land in front of my hotel. Enterprises are like Vegas -- with existing investments, legacy infrastructure and an endless maze of applications. Enterprises need to have in place a transformation strategy just like the city of Las Vegas
