A bit more on the ConvergedSystem 300 and 700

My last post, I had a podcast I did at VMware Partner Exchange giving a 30,000 foot view of the HP ConvergedSystem.  In this post, I'll come down a bit from the stratosphere and give you a bit more detail about a couple of the products in the portfolio.  The product managers for the ConvergedSystem 300 and 700 were in the booth and I have a couple of videos talking to them. Let's start with the entry level ConvergedSystem 300.

ConvergedSystem 300

Here's the description I found on an hp.com page:

If you have 50-300 VMs, the ConvergedSystem 300 is a fit — built on modular, standards-based infrastructure blocks that help reduce initial acquisition costs. It will arrive at your site pre-configured and pre-tested, ready to run. Even better, we’ll quote and configure your system in 20 minutes, move it to production in 20 days, and lower entry price by 25% so you can use it everywhere.*

And because I am HPStorageGuy, I'll mention that the storage used with the ConvergedSystem 300 is our StoreVirtual VSA.   Here's the video from the booth:

ConvergedSystem 700

Next up is the Converged System 700.   And again, from the hp.com page, here's the description:

For demanding environments with 100-1000 VMs or more, the ConvergedSystems 700 is the choice. It’s pre-configured and delivered ready to run enabling you to regain control of capital and operational expenditures. What’s more, we’ll quote in 30 minutes, move to production in 30 days, boost your efficiency by 3x, and reduce your TCO by 28%*.

The storage used in the 700 is HP 3PAR StoreServ.  Here's that video:

How do you quote so fast? Is this for big customers working directly with HP?

I mean I work for a small company and our VAR goes through AVNET for all HP stuff..

On a good day it can take 24 hours, and that's when I'm specifying exact part numbers, there's not much thinking required just give me the part#s and the quantity I am requesting.

Bad days can take several days to turn around a quote. Worst time we had took about 45 days to get a quote for a 3PAR system in Europe(Fall 2013). That was due to complexities around stuff in EU, next time we buy for EU we'll go another route.

The VAR is a friend of mine and I've been a customer for 5 years (though he recently moved to a new company). He says the AVNET rep(s) they have are slow (esp compared to his previous company).

Would be curious if HP has any sort of SLA or gaurantee that such a quote could be turned around in 30 minutes..or hell even 4 hours would be fine I'm sure for most customers !!

This is a good question let me try and give you a broader perspective. The reduced quote times  discussed  in this blog relate to the work we have done with our configuration to quote tools which reduce the time it takes to quote these systems. Both the ConvergedSystem 300 and 700 can be configured and quoted in about 20 minutes.

As part of our ConvergedSystems strategy  we’ve been able to streamline the quoting process by creating wizards that ask reps a few simple questions  that pull together all of the right part numbers automatically.  We’re working with channel partners like Avnet to make sure that they have access to this capability too.

Given the other human factors involved in generating and delivering a quote it would be very difficult to deliver on a specific SLA for this entire process.  But we are confident that we are giving our channel partners, as well as our own HP reps, the right tools that streamline what had been a more complex process.
