A little good news when I needed it - I'm a vExpert

Last night was a very tough night.  A family that I know and love is being torn apart.  Because of the issues they are dealing with, they are loosing their house to foreclosure.  We helped them move out last night.  I couldn't help but want to cry as three young boys saw their home come crumbling down.

After we did what we could, we brought a few of the boys to our house and I helped the others in the family get to a hotel for the night.  It was really late - after 2 AM.  I looked at my email and saw this:

Dear Calvin Zito,

We're pleased to designate you as a vExpert 2011 as recognition of your contributions to the VMware, virtualization, and cloud computing communities. You’ve done work above and beyond, and we’re delighted to communicate more closely, to share resources, and to offer other opportunities for greater interaction throughout the year as we continue to grow knowledge and success in the community of IT professionals. Welcome to the vExpert 2011 Program!

Thanks for all you do. The vExpert Program is going to be great this year, and we’re looking forward to working with you!

All the best,

John Troyer (vExpert Program Manager) and the VMware Social Media Team

p.s. I'd like to call your attention to our July 12 online event, “Raising the Bar, Part V.” This will be a live presentation from Paul Maritz and Steve Herrod, followed by multiple tracks of breakout sessions and live Q&A. Please register now at the event registration site and plan to attend. Also, please help us spread the word to others!

vmw-vexpert.jpgGetting this email was a tiny bright spot in what was a very hard night.  I'm honored and I'm proud to be counted among the vExperts.  I was watching on Twitter after I got my email late last night as others said they got vExpert notification too. Of the ones I've seen so far, I'm really humbled that VMware included me in this group.  Thanks John. Luke, and to the rest of team at VMware who have selected me.

In the big scheme of things, helping a family in need was about the most important thing I've done in a long time.  If you know someone that needs help, give them a hand up.  If you know someone that is struggling with tough challenges, call them and ask if you can help in any way.  Someone needs you help.

Thanks Rick - it sure does.  Congrats on also getting named a vExpert.  Looking forward to seeing you at VMworld!
