Announcing the HP 3PAR Get Thin Guarantee *

A couple of weeks ago at SNW, I did a “hands-on-lab” with our own HP 3PAR gear.  In that lab (which I hope to have up as a vlog in the near future) I used the Inform Management Console (IMC) to:

  1. Create a virtual volume (VV)
  2. Defined a host and export the VV to the host
  3. Create Thin Provisioned virtual volumes (TPVV) one with and another without “zero detect” enabled

The lab included some exercises of copying a large file of all zeros to the TPVVs I had created.  It was really a simple exercise but it made the HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning very real for me.

More on HP 3PAR Thin Provisioning

Isn't all TP created equal?  Not really.  There are several things that set 3PAR TP apart. 

 

  • Start thin: Thin Provisioning software: Autonomic provisioning and rreservationless, dedicate-on-write approach are key differentiators.  Watch out as some other vendors claim to be thin but require a sizable pre-dedicated pool.
  • Get thin: Thin Conversion software: Fat to thin volume conversation software that can help you migrate to the new "thinner you" and put your fat volumes on a major diet!  We leverage the zero-detection capabilities in our HP 3PAR Gen3 ASIC to help shed fat (volumes) and get thin!
