Capacity on Demand made easy!

Headshot 100X100.jpgBy Calvin Zito, @HPStorageGuy  vexpert 2012 logo.gif

I was walking around the HP Discover Zone (where the demos are) and noticed a booth that mentioned Capacity on Demand.  Back when we first brought the XP Disk Array into our portfolio, I was the marketing lead in storage on something we called iCOD (Instant Capacity on Demand) - so I stopped to ask about what this was.  That was a good choice because I learned about our latest Capacity On Demand program.

I was losing my voice after a couple of days of a lot of talking but fortunately I only had to ask a few questions as my guest Alain Amroun from our European HP Financial Services team gave me a good overview of the program. Check out the podcast with Alain.

If you rather download this as a podcast, right click here and save the MP3 file. You can also subscribe to my podcast on iTunes - go to the iTunes store and search for "Around the Storage Block" or you can open this link and click on the "View in iTunes" button under my picture.

Alain gave me the URL www.hp.com/go/CapacityOnDemand as a place to get more information on the program - however, it doesn't appear to be working now.  I'll get a URL and update it here.

Sounds like a neat idea, sounds like the program is brand new (as of this HP Discover?)

There is(or at least was) a similar program that I learned about last year, which is particularly useful with 3PAR's wide striping. I don't know the name of the program but essentially it allowed you to buy X number of disks, and only pay for the amount of data that you write to the system. It's useful for 3PAR of course because you have the potential of leveraging a much larger number of disks for the I/O, and still only pay for a subset of the system.  I don't know more details than that, other than I don't think it's a well known program, and the 3PAR reps I talked to at the time had at most 1 customer between them that used it. Wouldn't surprise me if many of the service providers that use 3PAR would probably be in this program.

I think Brocade has(or at least had) a similar program where you can buy their switches and only pay based on the # of ports that are used.

Hey Nate - I haven't stayed up on all the different capacity on demand programs for several years but it didn't sound like this specific program was new and I think I saw a press release about it so I assume it is new.

There used to be another capacity program that billed based on usage - the former program manager for that now is our EG (Dave Donatelli's business) lead for events but I'll ask her to point me in the right direction and if I get more info about that, will let you know.

Hi Calvin,

In the meantime, colleagues can access the Capacity on Demand materials here: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/hp-financial-services/programs/capacity-on-demand.html.

Thanks Amy - I was looking for some place with info and couldn't find it on my own!
