Cloud Boot Camp 101 Podcast

Back in the 90's and early 2000's, storage vendors were all talking about storage virtualization.  The challenge was that everyone meant something different and most were having a very hard time articulating what the benefits were.  It would make a great case study about confusing customers through marketing hype. It's interesting to me now looking back that storage virtualization is a natural conversation to have today - but it wasn't 10 years ago.

In many ways, the conversations firing up around cloud, cloud computing, storage for the cloud felt the same to me.  I've personally just avoided the word cloud.  Others in the industry seemed to be taking their best chocolate sauce and renaming it cloud sauce (if you get my meaning there).

At VMworld a few weeks ago, I was able to attend a session called a "Cloud Boot Camp".  It really wasn't a session at VMworld but was something HP offered a limited number of customers to sign up for and get a taste of a service HP has to help customers understand cloud talk to HP experts about whether or clouds are in their future.

Ray Richardson works in the Americas Technology Services organization and is the Cloud Lead and is a Senior Solution Architect.  He led the Cloud Boot Camp I attended and today I have a podcast with Ray giving an overview.  I found this extremely enlightening and helped me to better understand cloud computing and especially private clouds.  Here's the podcast with Ray:

There's a lot more you can look at if this has got your interested.  Here are a few things:

  • HP CloudStart is the industry’s first all-in-one solution that enables clients to fast track to a private cloud computing ecosystem in 30 days. This turnkey solution, led by HP TS Consulting Services (Ray's organization), is built on HP Converged Infrastructure and enhanced with HP Cloud Service Automation software. HP CloudStart provides a fixed-price, pre-integrated private cloud solution that can rapidly deploy for the enterprise and service provider market.
  • HP Cloud Service Automation for Matrix: extended BladeSystem Matrix with the industry’s first one-touch provisioning and management of both applications and infrastructure. It's an integrated solution from HP Software and Solutions and our server, storage and networking organization.  This solution provides customers with a common template designer for cloud services, and a common self-service portal.
  • If you want to learn a starting place to read more about what HP is doing, there are two places: first this hp.com page that is a good beginning point and second, this new feature article that talks about building a private cloud.
