Delivering Software-Defined Storage to the masses—for free

By Kate Davis, @KateAtHP, WW Product Marketing Manager, HP StoreVirtual Storage

KateDavis.jpgHappy New Year! I know it’s November, but at HP, November marks the start of a new fiscal year, new opportunities and new program rollouts. It’s so exciting! Better yet, I get to announce to you a new program that is aimed at deploying a new style of IT through the extension of Software-Defined Storage into virtualized environments.

Here’s the big news: Effective November 1, 2013, a variety of ProLiant Gen8 server models now come with a free 1TB license for StoreVirtual VSA software.

What this means is if you purchase one of the following ProLiant Gen8 rack, tower, or blade servers you can go and download the StoreVirtual VSA software and a 1TB capacity license for free. Servers include: BL420c, BL460c, BL465c, BL660c, DL320e Gen8 v2, DL360p, DL380p, DL385p, DL560, and ML350p.

This program, called Unlock your Storage with HP ProLiant, offers StoreVirtual VSA as a feature of the ProLiant server because as architectures change we know you’ll need it. Both your infrastructure and business requirements are evolving. Now is the time to bring virtualized apps and storage closer together. You can do more through convergence—with benefits of performance improvements for processing data, efficiencies that benefit the bottom line and simplification that eases the work for IT staff. This is the new style of IT.

Now’s the time for Software-Defined

Some of you may have read my posts earlier this year  on Software-Defined Storage (SDS). If not, here’s the high-level definition of software-defined storage:

  • Allows users to support traditional and emerging enterprise application storage workloads
  • Deploys on independent off-the-shelf, industry-standard hardware and hypervisors
  • Eliminates the dependency on traditional storage hardware platforms

Our job at HP is to help you prepare your infrastructure for what may come – without requiring knowledge of what exactly that might entail. When looking to the new style of IT, where changing direction opens up new opportunities, you will see that SDS offers a cost-optimized, flexible solution that simplifies your environment.

Smooth move: Silversea Cruises transitions to Gen8 and StoreVirtual VSA

If you happened to see our announcement today,  the customer who was quoted is a cruise line. Silversea Cruises runs ProLiant servers and StoreVirtual storage in both its data centers on land and ships at sea. Think about a cruise ship –it is limited in power and space but its needs are still the same as any other business. You have customers and staff that depend on technology every waking minute. The cruise line transitioned this year from traditional IT and have deployed ProLiant DL380p Gen8 servers with StoreVirtual VSA.

From making this change, Silversea Cruises was able to “re-provision [its] virtual environment, significantly expand [its] processing capacity and memory, increase [its] usable storage, and reduce [its] physical footprint by 50%.”

The transition of IT is upon us. We’ve transitioned to mobile devices for our computing needs. Now is the time for efficiencies and agility to transform the data center.

Check out this video  on the new program and see how StoreVirtual VSA and ProLiant can help you.
