Discover Day 2: storage keynote and sessions point the way to the next era

By Melissa Saegert Elicker, social media editor, HP Storage

MSE.jpgWednesday was time to get down to business at HP Discover with a full line-up of sessions that together tell a compelling story about how HP is accelerating the next era of storage. In no particular order, here’s a quick look at the keynote and sessions I attended today:

Storage Track Keynote

A crowd gathered to hear David Scott, Senior Vice President and General Manager, HP Storage, outline the vision for Converged Storage and how it is transforming the industry.

David covered the whole line of HP Storage products – StoreServ, StoreAll, StoreOnce and StoreVirtual with a focus on flash and software-defined storage innovations.

He shared a video where we heard from John Price, system design architect for flash-optimized storage. And he was joined on stage by Ken Kirchhoff, Director, Enterprise Storage and Unix Systems at priceline.com. Ken talked about how HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage is enabling the next era of travel services.

Scott_keynote.JPGOf course, the best keynotes include a little dramatic flair and this did not disappoint. Early on in the presentation, a flash of light and music signaled the reveal of a new HP 3AR StoreServ 7450 Storage system, delivering all-flash array performance without compromise. A little bit later, all eyes turn to the other side of the stage for the unveiling of HP StoreOnce VSA. But wait. Nor hardware is included or required. So there’s nothing there!

BB3008 - HP StoreVirtual: How SMB to Fortune 100 companies use software-defined storage

Kate Davis, WW Product Marketing Manager, and Sam Bohlin, WW Product Manager, teamed up to put some definition around software-defined storage. A key message is how HP is giving customers options to fit their infrastructure:

  • SMB – single tenant Converged Infrastructure in a Box
  • Remote sites – data consolidation and mobility for the edge
  • Cloud – storage for multi-tenant service environments

But don’t just take their word for it . . . as a panel of three customers shared their experiences with HP StoreVirtual Storage. We heard from Chris Betlach, IT Manager, Haldeman-Homme, Inc.; Chip Burnett, Sr. Infrastructure Administrator, TTNET, Trading Technologies, Inc.; and Chris Greer, Chief Engineer, Enterprise Architecture, FedEx.

They represented companies of different sizes and industries with one thing in common – they have found the benefits of HP StoreVirtual Storage. In a nutshell, these benefits include:

Ability to take snapshots a tremendous time saver, a true game saver

Easy to handle management to others in team with no experience with storage

A platform to grow into . . . start small and grow

TB3013 - HP StoreOnce Catalyst: moving deduplicated data has never been this easy

The talk was technical in this session led by Bill Philbin, Vice President, Virtual Development Unit, HP Storage, and Lowell Dale, Architect, HP IT Enterprise Architecture.

Speaking with an engineer’s insights, they discussed federated deduplicaton in action with HP StoreOnce Catalyst and what it delivers:

  • Extremely fast backup (up to 100TB/Hr on B6200)
  • Cost effective branch office solution
  • Can be installed on Application Servers, Media Servers or StoreOnce Appliances
  • Simplified management of all backup and replication tasks across the IT infrastructure (branch office and data center)
  • Cascaded or multi-hop data movement (1:n, n:1, n:n) for comprehensive disaster recovery

Lowell also spoke about HPIT Data Protection Services strategic initiatives related to reducing footprint, ensuring recoverability and adapting to emerging needs. He also

It was a very interactive session with attendees asking questions and sharing experiences, questions, issues and forward-looking views.

BB4361 - Optimizing HP Storage for VMware: Current Integrations and Software-Defined Storage

Eric Siebert, Solutions Manager, HP, and Suzy Visvanathan, Sr. Product Manager, VMware, joined forces to talk about the challenges and trends related to cloud infrastructure and cloud provisioning.

The agenda included insights on the vCloud storage vision and key storage initiatives to enable new storage tiers, redefine storage compute integration and deliver cloud-scale data management.

Eric homed in on how HP Storage provides best-in-class storage for vSphere through integration, innovation and solutions.

Working late to get the blog out has its own rewards.

fireworks.JPGYes, there was a spectacular late-night fireworks display off in the direction of Paris, Planet Hollywood and Caesar’s Palace - all from my hotel window. Viva Las Vegas!

Tomorrow. . . more sessions.
