Don't let unreliable data protection jeopardize your company reputation

A little bit of risk can be a good thing. If companies never took chances, business would stagnate. But the last thing you want to do is gamble with your company's reputation by not adequately protecting your data. So how do you do that when your business operations span the globe?

One of our customers, a logistics company with nearly 1,200 remote sites, has struggled to answer this question. Each branch or remote office must keep important customer data on site. The company had to find a reliable way to protect this huge amount of data, without overstretching its IT budget or overflowing backup windows.  To tackle these challenges, the logistics company turned to the HP StoreOnce Backup solution.  HP StoreOnce provides these three key business benefits:

  • Increased agility
  • Reduced risk
  • Reduced costs

Enterprise data is growing at a rate of 25 to 50 percent a year, and for many companies 50 percent of their data is stored in remote sites, trends that help explain why enterprise IT organizations rank improving backup and recovery as one of their top spending priorities.*  HP StoreOnce provides capabilities in six crucial areas to help businesses such as the logistics company protect its data:

  • A simple way to back up data no matter where it resides. Federated deduplication via the StoreOnce Catalyst software enables the logistics company to use one solution to back up data from the very edge of its organization right through to the core data center. Data is deduplicated only once using a single technology; it can then be moved anywhere in deduplicated form. This reduces management time, lowers costs, and makes maintenance much easier.
  • An ability to accommodate growth. A scale-out architecture allows an ever-growing number of servers and storage to remain part of a single management domain. This means admins don’t have to spend time learning or configuring new systems as the business grows, saving time and money.
  • Faster backup and restore. Typically most organizations have an overnight backup window. But if you’re still doing backup jobs from your primary storage the next morning, then backup jobs are often stopped and data left unprotected.  With HP’s backup assessment tool we measure the number of backup jobs that fail; their size and the results can be quite shocking for our customers.  By deploying multiple instances of StoreOnce Catalyst software in parallel you can significantly increase the performance of your system, ensuring backups are completed.
  • High reliability. A highly resilient design with Autonomic Restart means that in the middle of the night when you are hopefully asleep and a hardware component fails, the backups will keep on running.  In contrast, if the controller or server fails on one of our competitor’s solutions, then the backups and indeed restores will not function until the server is repaired or replaced. HP StoreOnce has many other security and reliability features to ensure your data is protected.
  • Enhanced security. HP StoreOnce supports encryption and secure erase to ensure your data is not accessible to unauthorized users and is unrecoverable once deleted.
  • Reduced capacity guarantee. When you move from your legacy backup system to any HP StoreOnce solution, HP’s Get Protected Guarantee ensures that you will see a 95 percent reduction in stored backup data. If you don't, HP will make up the difference by providing additional capacity and associated software and support.
