HP 3PAR StoreServ All Flash gets dedupe

I'm going to have to pace myself this week!  HP Discover hasn't formerly started and I'm beyond excited.  We held our press conference yesterday where David Scott shared our storage news with the press and bloggers in attendance.  My previous blog post and ChalkTalk gave you the high level snapshot of the news and in this post, I want to give you a bit more detail on the HP 3PAR news.

I think the starting point is the ChalkTalk on our HP 3PAR news: deduplication for our all-flash 7450.

Most impressive to me is that HP now delivers high IOPS ( over 900,000 IOPS) with predictable under 1 ms latency.  What stands out is that we can now do this at the same price as 15K SAS spinning disk drives and not sacrifice scale or resiliency.  One competitor with a traditional auto-tiering array requires 25X more space, 8X the power, and costs 3.8x more per GB.  So why would you want to use EMC VMAX auto-tiering?  With the cost, power, and space savings, I think the answer is you wouldn't.

What about the flash starts-ups?  Compared to HP 3PAR, Pure Storage requires 2X more $/GB.

I need to get to the formal kickoff HP Discover this morning so I'll leave the deeper dive discussion for some of our 3PAR experts to talk more about in the coming days.  Here are the hightlights:

>  Intelligent sparing reduces$/GB.  In addition, we have 1.9TB cMLC SSD with more than 30% more usable capacity per drive and patened Adaptive Sparing.

>  Hardware-acclerated inline deduplication

> Patented Express Indexing - this is the method we use to do hashtag look up and because of it, we can scale a 7450 All Flash System to over 1.3 PB, significantly higher than other all-flash systems.

> We are offering a 5 year warranty on all SSDs.

>  One last highlight is the Get 6-Nines Guarantee.  WIth proven tier-1 features like synchronous remove replication, long distance 3-site replication, and peer persistence (just to name a few), the 7450 All-Flash array is a tier-1 platform; and we're so sure of it, we're offering a 99.9999% availability guarantee. And note this HA guarantee is available across all HP 3PAR systems with 4 nodes or more.

I've given you a lot of information and we'll need to talk about this in the coming weeks to help you better understand but I'm extremely excited to help you understand the great innovation happening in HP Storage.  In my opinion, we've left the start-up flash array and auto-tiering array vendors in the dust.

I'm off to HP Discover - we'll have more to share so check back!

I have a question regarding the block sizes and IOPS:

Is the 900,000 IOPS that are being touted for the StorServ 7450 above done using 4K blocks or 32K blocks.

I've gone through the technical specifications and haven't found anything

Love you guys and have always been a huge HP Storage and 3PAR supporter... But this really won't make much of a difference until you extend it beyond flash. Flash is such a small use case for 95% of organizations in the mid market, and many even in the enterprise space that while this is a nice to have feature, its not going to really make a difference.

Is there any plan around extending de-dupe to spinning rust?
