The other day I had a "snippet" from our HP Discover Blogger coffee talk with David Scott and Siamak Nazari.  I'll have a few more podcasts from the coffee talk and their will be more details they gave on HP 3PAR - some really interesting stuff that I'm excited to share.   I also had Stephen Spellicy, Director of Product Management for HP Autonomy Enterprise Backup Solutions with us.  At HP Discover, we announced HP Data Protector 8 and Stephen answered a few questions that the bloggers had.

What's new with HP Data Protector 8?

It's a bit of a catch-22 that HP is such a big company. We included the new Data Protector 8 news in our press conference but there was so much other news that I was pretty sure most people didn't really get what we announced.  So before I share with you the audio from the coffee talk where Stephen answered questions from the bloggers, here's the highlights of what's new:

  • Breakthrough Scalability - Data Protector 8.0 introduces enhanced, high-performing backup capabilities and enables a single Data Protector instance to scale to thousands of clients, manage 1 Trillion filenames, and run 100 thousand sessions per day.
  • Network Bandwidth Throttling - Data Protector features a bandwidth control capability that allows you to configure a maximum bandwidth limit that can be used by the backup process. This reduces cost by eliminating the need for a dedicated network and virtually creating a class of services for your network.
  • Enhanced 3PAR StoreServ integration support - HP 3PAR StoreServ customers can also benefit from Data Protector's Zero Downtime Backup (ZDB) capability. This integration provides snapshot management to protect application data, making additional copies to deduplicated secondary storage without impacting the production environment.
  • Advanced VMware Restore Options - Virtual machines can be restored as new instances, without overwriting the existing virtual machine. Admins can create a "sandbox" to troubleshoot and to verify the right backups without committing changes to their live environment. DP 8 also introduces smart caching on the backup host, with more than 20 percent improvement on VMware backup performance.
  • Integrated Support for NEW StoreEver MSL6480 -DP 8 integrates with our HP StoreEver MSL6480 library, our latest mid-range tape library that we also announced at HP Discover.
  • StoreOnce VSA Ready - In addition to StoreOnce Software store (which is our StoreOnce Catalyst API integration with Data Protector) and StoreOnce physical appliances, HP Data Protector now supports StoreOnce VSA via both the standard Catalyst interface and Ethernet protocols with the same Federated deduplication functionality.

With that, here's the podcast from the Blogger Coffee Talk with Stephen:

If you rather download this as a podcast, right click here and save the MP3 file. You can also subscribe to my podcast on iTunes - go to the iTunes store and search for "Around the Storage Block" or you can open this link and click on the "View in iTunes" button under my picture.

One more multi-media element to share with you - we do have a video demo of Data Protector 7 and vCloud Director and since that was discussed, I thought I'd include it.
