HP Discover wrap up – so many storage sessions so little time

By Melissa Elicker, Social Media Editor, HP Storage

Now it’s not a very formal survey, but according to the customer gentleman in my hotel elevator who said he’s been to multiple Discover events before, “This one was the best ever.”  I tend to agree. Here, from my view, are some of the highlights – from storage news to quick recaps of sessions I attended on Wednesday and Thursday, plus a fond farewell (for now) to our Glove and Boots friends.

First: congratulations to our partner, iTernity

iTernity.JPGOn Wednesday,iTernity was recognized with the 2014 HP AllianceOne Partner of the Year Award in the Storage Category. iTernity is also a member of the HP Data Agile Partner Program. The program enables our partners to learn about the HP Backup, Recovery and Archive portfolio and test and certify their applications in a dedicated HP lab environment and take advantage of unique marketing opportunities. Program members also have access to specialized trainings and technical assistance.

Seeing sessions with a BURA focus

HP StoreOnce was a hot topic at sessions like this one in the Innovation Theater on Thursday:

The end of data protection as you know it—reducing risk in a world of cloud and big data

UPS.JPGPatrick Osborne, Director of Product Management and Marketing, welcome Carla Maier, Infrastructure Architect, UPS, to the stage to talk about her company’s backup strategy and decision to go with HP storage. She described the current plan as centralized, service-oriented and going forward. Patrick wrapped up the session, emphasizing how big backup is a big problem that is only getting bigger and how HP StoreOnce Federated Backup Store is going where no backup has gone before—with 4x capacity per store while being 75% easier to manage.

And here featuring a healthcare customer:

Shields Healthcare diagnoses data protection ailments and turns to HP for the cure

Andrew Dickerson, Senior Marketing Manager, Backup, Recovery, and Archive Solutions, kicked off the session with an overview of this event’s HP StoreOnce news. He then turned the session over to Doug Hayward with Shields Healthcare who built a convincing case for why his organization chose StoreOnce with benefits the he identifies as:

  • Increased storage
  • Faster backup and recovery times
  • Lower maintenance costs
  • Increased flexibility
  • A great customer experience
  • Peace of mind!

On the HP 3PAR StoreServ session trail

Here is a look at a couple of the 3PAR StoreServ session I attended:

Turbocharge your applications without compromise—using HP 3PAR StoreServ 7450

Priyadarshi Prasad, Sr. Product Manager, HP 3PAR Storage, took a technical deep dive into how the 3PAR StoreServ 7450 Solid-State Array accelerates virtual desktop and OLTP applications without compromising Tier-1features. Our customer, Rakuten, joined the presentation. Supporting the uses cases were solid facts and figures showing how the 7450 delivers better performance and lower cost when compared to legacy HDD-based storage.

Tier-1 enterprise storage with HP 3PAR StoreServ and HP XP7

This session covered two Tier-1 storage birds with one stone, as it were. Ivan Iannaccone, 3PAR StoreServ Product Management, started off this session (where the fact that is was one of the last storage sessions of the last day did not damped attendee interest). Featured use cases covered server virtualization, private cloud and ITaaS and mission-critical applications—all well served by these key HP 3PAR StoreServ 10000 attributes:

  • Multi-tenant—with Tier-1 resiliency and scalability for massive consolidation
  • Efficient—to reduce capacity requirements by 50%
  • Autonomic—to reduce administration by 90%, optimize $/IOP and $/GB
  • Federated—to refresh assets or load balance without service disruption

For the second half of the session, Karen Van Warmerdam, Worldwide Product Marketing, took the reins to focus on the new HP XP7. She gave a brief overview of the history (and future) of the XP product line, highlighting the HP XP7 for being:

  • Unstoppable—for always-on disaster recovery protection
  • Unbreakable—for uncompromising security
  • Unbeatable—for increased performance and scalability
  • Unconditional—with upgrade paths for an extended useful life

See you later Glove and Boots!

GB.JPGYou saw them everywhere this week, challenging Discover attendees to say YES to change!  Just like this.

Now what?

Discover may be over but the information-sharing and conversation continues here. So stay tuned. And we invite you to follow our popular 3PAR Thursday and BURA Sunday blog series.
