HP ExpertOne Fast Track for storage

Headshot 100X100.jpgBy Calvin Zito, @HPStorageGuy

I have a "Power Podcast" for you today and on it I get to make an announcement about a program with Karl Kovacs.  The program is called the HP ExpertOne Fast Track for Storage and Karl is part of the ExpertOne team.  The Power Podcast - a podcast with slides that I put on YouTube - is short but I also wanted to be sure you could read about it so I also have a transcription of what Karl and I talked about.  It isn't word for word since I had to listen and type fast but the content is there.  Here's the Power Podcast:

Here's the transcript of our discussion:

Calvin (CZ):  Today on the blog I have Karl Kovacs – his Twitter ID's are @karlkovacs and @HPExpertOne.  Today we’re going to talk about HP’s certification process called and then a new program we have HP Fast Track for Storage.  Let’s start at the high level and give me an overview of HP ExpertOne.

Karl (KK):  ExpertOne is a certification and learning program for customers, partners and our employees.  It covers all the solutions, portfolio, and services that HP has for our customers.

CZ:  What are the benefits someone gets from an ExpertOne certification?

KK:  It’s an industry leading certification program.  We don’t focus on a particular product like a lot of other certification program.  We certify across a portfolio.  When someone has achieved that certification, they can go to a customer site with confidence and talk to them about their networking, about their storage, about their cloud, or converged infrastructure – about all of their needs.  And they can do it at a sales level, pre-sales, as an engineer who is designing, implementing and/or managing a solution.

CZ:  Let’s talk about the HP ExpertOne Fast Track for storage program. What is it?

KK:  What we’ve designed is a program for people who hold certain EMC and NetApp certifications to “fast track” their way into our career certifications.   We have three storage certifications:

  •  Accredited Integration Specialist (AIS): Deploy storage solutions for SMB to small enterprise environment to get an office up and running efficiently and correctly.
  •  Accredited Solutions Expert (ACE): Design, implement, and manage a complete storage solution in a converged infrastructure environment from the small business to enterprise-level.
  • Master Accredited Solutions Expert (MACE):  Architect multi-site, enterprise-level solutions in the context of a converged Infrastructure environment and data center design.

What we’re doing is saying that those people that hold EMC and NetApp certifications, we’ll recognize the skills and competencies you hold in storage in general and only test you on the HP specific components.  Instead of starting from scratch, you only have to pass four exams instead of six; instead of spending 24 days of instructor lead and self-study training, that gets cut to eight days, or 12 depending on the certification they already hold.  It really is a monumental Fast Track program.

CZ:  This Fast Track program sounds like a great solution for partners to work with HP Storage.  How can partners benefit from this including existing HP channel partners?

KK:  Yes – we have channel partners out there today who hold HP certifications they probably also have employees that have EMC and NetApp certification; this is a great way to get them selling HP Storage Solutions.

CZ:  With HP 3PAR growing at over triple digits quarter over quarter for six straight quarters, I think there’s a lot of good reasons for partners who have competency in other areas to add HP Storage.

KK:  Yes!  We don’t have enough partners out there because the demand is so high for 3PAR and StoreOnce and we need to scale more people up to handle that demand.  It’s been a phenomenal success and we’re passing that on to other certified people who have the skills and just need a little bit of additional training and testing to get to the same level with HP.

CZ:  We’ve talked around this question of the value of certification; I think of a guy like Chris Wahl who we were with at HP Discover and sees a lot of value in certification; for the person that doesn’t see the value in certification like ExpertOne, what would you say to them?

KK:  Wow – you look at what you get out of the certification after you’ve finished the training and passed the exams – there’s a lot of pride in the knowledge and skill you’ve obtained.  There’s a very high bar for the skills and competencies that a certified professional holds.  A person like Chris Wahl walking out of HP Discover with his new certification can go to a customer site and with confidence say “I have the definitive skills that HP says I need to design, deploy and manage these solutions”.  It really is a merit badge – a badge of honor for your skills.

CZ:  Last thing, where can someone learn more about ExpertOne?

KK: They can go to www.hp.com/go/ExpertOne
