HP Industry Analyst Summit and Converged Infrastructure

Today kicked off our HP Industry Analyst Summit - a gather of executives across HP with over 300 industry analysts.  I understand today also included some financial analysts.  I'm not there but have attended in the past.  Compared to years past, my Twitter stream is filled with comments from attendees using the #HPSummit hashtag. Very cool to see and get a good sense of the event from afar.

Converged Infrastructure, front and center!

Dave Donatelli was on the agenda early today and talked about HP Converged Infrastructure - a strategy that we publicly announced back in the fall of 2009 but actually was in the works for several years at HP.  Dave definitely made it happen and solidified it but even before that, dating back to 2005, our enterprise business was focused on Adaptive Infrastructure - a pre-cursor to today's HP Converged Infrastructure strategy.

I don't know exactly what Dave said today but he talked about Converged Infrastructure originating with HP and now being copied by several competitors.  One tweet says, "HP: Thank us for the term Converged Infrastructure".  And to that I must agree.

However, one of the attending analyst tweeted that he took exception to Dave saying that HP "invented" the term.  I don't know if Dave said HP invented it or "thank us for the term" and I don't care.  I'm pretty sure the words converged and infrastructure were in existence before 2009 and HP making it our focus.  What we did do is lead the way with our strong portfolio of servers, storage, networking and software to create the category.

Analysts and what they said at IAS
A few other comments I saw during Dave's keynote were:

  • Rachel Dines: Donatelli says HP Enterprise Group will be shifting to focus on own IP. Already seeing this in storage with StoreOnce
  • Carla Arend: Simplification is key to HP. Want to be easy to do business with. Removed many layers to shorten decision making.
  •  Mike Spanbauer: Donatelli: HP is Reinventing Infrastructure, believes they can back it up.  Time will tell and the buyer(s) will decide
  • Ezra Gottheil: If anyone can revolutionize infrastructure, it is HP
  • Jim Lyons: Nicely timed with hpsummit - HP release on Converged IT Infrastructure  leadership, customer-focused (link to press release)
  • Dave Vellante: 3PAR demand exceeds supply according to Donatelli - imo 3PAR is one of the great products in the biz  (One of my favorite tweets of the day!)
  • Calvin Zito (yes, that is me): RT englishmdp: At hpsummit: ... if a leader is someone you'd willingly follow, then Meg Whitman looks to clear the bar >> I'm all in!

Don't miss this

If you're not a Twitter expert, "RT" means I resent what @englishmdp said - that's Mark Peters from Enterprise Strategy Group.  I added my "I'm all in" at the end.  And I really am all in.  Despite the drama we've seen over the last couple of years, I'm extremely confident in the future HP has.  In fact, a leading competitor was pursuing me to join them after I was offered the possibility of an early retirement from HP.  I could have walked away with a nearly two years of salary and gone to a leading competitor - but I said no.  That's how excited I am about the future here.

Wrapping up Day 1
I found a nice day 1 summary of the HP Industry Analyst Summit on Storify by Jim Lyons.  I don't know Jim personally but I really liked what he dug up from IAS in his story.
