Yesterday Kate Davis had a post that introduced you to the HP StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid Storage appliance. Today I want to follow that up with a couple of things you can check.

HP StoreVirtual 4335 and portfolio overview ChalkTalk

As you probably come to expect from me, I have a ChalkTalk.  I also took the opportunity in this ChalkTalk to give an overview of the StoreVirtual portfolio along with introducing the StoreVirtual 4335.  There have been a lot of updates to the StoreVirtual portfolio over the last year - seems like we were either rolling hardware of part of the family every couple of months and there was also a couple updates to the LeftHand OS.  I think the StoreVirtual portfolio is as solid as it's ever been and should be considered by any small and midsize business looking at a storage purchase.  Here's a snapshot of the portfolio that I talk about in the ChalkTalk.

I think the ChalkTalk is a good overview of both the portfolio and the 4335 so check it out!

HP StoreVirtual Podcast

Brad Katz has worked with HP StoreVirtual going back to the early days of LeftHand Networks.  He reached out to me a couple weeks ago and asked if we could do a podcast when we announced the 4335.  We did that podcast yesterday and talking to Brad has really helped me better understand the 4335 and also Adaptive Optimization.

We had a live audience listening to our podcast.  A couple of things we talked about make more sense with graphics and I sent these out on Twitter so folks listening could  look while we talked about them so I wanted to share them with you too.

StoreVirtual AO.pngFirst image is focused on the "heat map" that Adaptive Optimization uses to manage moving data between tiers.  As you can see from the graphic, StoreVirtual uses a 256KB page size.  On the left you can see a representation of the heat map.  The heat map tracks both read and write access to all the pages and manages moving data between tiers.  There's a lot more detail about this in the podcast.

AO and NetworkRAID.jpgThe second image we used helps clarify how Network RAID technology and Adaptive Optimization work together. Kate used a similar image in her blog post yesterday but in the podcast, Brad explained the concept of Preferred Page technology and helped make clear how the two technologies work together.

During the podcast,  I took question from the audience - it was a really good conversation and again I highly recommend you check it out!

If you rather download this as a podcast, right click here and save the MP3 file. You can also subscribe to my podcast on iTunes - go to the iTunes store and search for "Around the Storage Block" or you can open this link and click on the "View in iTunes" button under my picture.

Lastly, you can learn more about StoreVirtual by visiting hp.com/go/StoreVirtual and there's a really good technical white paper that talks about Adaptive Optimization that you can check out.
