One last session from out HP Tech Day a couple of weeks ago that I didn't highlight is the final session of our two day event (the tour of New Belgium Brewery didn't count as a session) is the HP VirtualSystem overview.  What sticks out in my mind is that after talking about the VirtualSystem at last summer with bloggers, I had a couple guys come to me at VMworld and tell me what a great solution it is and that they've quoted it in to several customers.

John Obeto had a camera on most all the presentations (as did Jeffery Powers) and I thought I'd share John's video with you.  After the video, I'll also include the session notes that John Cummings took for me during the session.

HP's Mike Koponen introduces us to HP VirtualSystem, a unified server, storage, networking, and virtualization hardware & software platform certified for both Microsoft Hyper-V and VMware

Session notes

Mike Koponen, Solution Marketing Manager

Mike’s filling us in on a string of recent announcements about HP VirtualSystem. The whole principle of this converged storage: customers want to decrease the time to deploy virtualized environments. So we have taken balanced building blocks of servers, storage and networks, predefined configs, made it extremely easy to order these and get them installed.

Benefits of HP VirtualSystem: Without HP VS, it’s a much longer process to install, assemble, test etc. Can take 6 months, but with VS can take just 6 weeks.

Customer quote who deployed VS2 system ”This gave us a 99% reduction in system time to value” “Twice as much staff time for innovation!"

Mike digs into HP VirtualSystem solution design principles: Balanced and optimized for “typical workloads” say 1 or 2 VM/core customer average; storage component average 30-50 IOPS/VM

Ordering configs are very simple for channel partners and direct sales team -- Select Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware.   Base or extended, power options, service level (comes with a basic service level).  And that’s about it.

Performance leadership: First ever industry standard benchmark on a converged storage system. Competitive advantages include:

  • Fabric: 2x performance differential over competitors; 50% less energy; 65% lower TCO.
  • Compute: 3x I/O throughput; 2x memory
  • Storage: 50% lower cost
  • 10x management efficiency
  • Management: 8.3% reduction in downtime
  • 1 integrated management console

Mike: “These are converged infrastructure on a rack! We’re really putting our money where our mouth is here.”
