HP named a leader in first Magic Quadrant for Deduplication Backup Target Appliances

“By 2018, 50% of applications with high change rates will be backed up directly to deduplication target appliances, bypassing the backup server, up from 10% today.” *

In response to this rapid market growth, Gartner recently published its first ever Magic Quadrant for Deduplication Backup Appliances to help storage professional’s short list vendors. We believe that this report is a testament to a growing recognition that backup and recovery is the next critical frontier in data center modernization. We are pleased to announce that Gartner positioned HP StoreOnce Backup within the Leaders Quadrant with only one other vendor. Here’s our take on why.

This graphic was published by Gartner, Inc. as part of a larger research document and should be evaluated in the context of the entire document. The Gartner document is available upon request from HP. Gartner does not endorse any vendor, product or service depicted in its research publications, and does not advise technology users to select only those vendors with the highest ratings. We’ve been around the backup track for a long time

HP’s 30-year plus track record in the backup and recovery business coupled with heavy investment resulted in products that were designed to reduce cost, lower risk and eliminate complexity from the start. Take HP StoreOnce federated deduplication for example. This technology simplifies your entire backup infrastructure by consolidating, automating and streamlining backup and recovery processes. With a single architecture you can deploy:

  • In any place—from the smallest remote office through to the largest data center
  • In almost any way—on the backup or application server, as a virtual machine, in dedicated hardware or in the backup software
  • In any scale—up to 1.7 PBs

All well and good you might say, but HP StoreOnce with federated deduplication also passes the “So what?” test through the HP Get Protected Backup Guarantee that offers to reduce your storage capacity by 95%.

We deliver products that fit

While sharing the same underlying federated deduplication architecture, we’ve listened to our customers and responded with products that fit the environment they’re used in. For instance, there’s HP StoreOnce VSA, a virtual backup application that provides all the benefits of StoreOnce with a low point of entry for automated, consolidated backup for even the smallest of offices.

At the other end of the scale, we offer HP StoreOnce multi-node solutions for enterprise environments, like HP StoreOnce 6500 with high-availability features including Autonomic Restart to ensure that backups keep performing. In the event of a controller failure, data is not left unprotected. What’s more, the fastest backup and restore speeds in the industry reduce downtime and support advanced service-level agreements.

We’re building an ecosystem

Backup doesn’t work in a vacuum. It exists as part of data lifecycle and a full spectrum of data protection solutions. HP continues to invest in a converged storage management strategy that unifies management regardless of technology. Unlike other competitors, we combine the best of disk and tape to deliver the lowest total cost of ownership across the lifecycle.

In addition to the wide support for StoreOnce by the majority of backup applications, our backup appliances are truly integrated to deliver advanced backup management and seamless data movement through HP Data Protector, Symantec, Oracle, BridgeHead software and many others.

According to the Gartner report, “Leaders provide mature offerings that meet market demand. They have demonstrated the vision necessary to sustain their market positions as requirements evolve.”*

We believe HP’s position on the Magic Quadrant demonstrates that our unique converged backup approach is resonating with customers, supporting rapid market adoption and increasingly driving HP StoreOnce out in front.

Very nice to see. Now, please push t he rating past EMC.  Please note, I think the new HP Data Protection Channel Partner Newsletter is a great idea!
