Manage QoS of a VMware VM with APEX

It's nice to reach the finish line - or maybe I should say get to half time - look back on what you did and say, time to take a break.  Well, I'm not going on vacation (though my wife and daughter are leaving for 10 days in the morning) but I'm wrapping up this blitz of podcasts I did talking about the VMware Cloud Infrastructure announcement

The topic of today's podcast is one I enjoyed; I've talked about Application Performance eXtender (APEX) software for the P9500 and XP Disk Array in the past.  This is an HP-only software product that can manage the QoS of an application (on supported OS's), servers, and now a VMware virtual machine.  That means you can manage which VM's get the resources needed to meet your QoS requirements.  And it's not just looking at the HBA but it integrates deep in the P9500 or XP Disk Array to ensure you meet the QoS you specify.  Here's a whiteboard video with the architect of APEX I had on my blog last September that gives a very good explanation of APEX.  This was my first ATSB  vblog.  :smileyvery-happy:

One more resource to check out that talks about APEX before I share the podcast.  Here's a demo I found on the APEX hp.com page that I think is Flash-based.  I can't embed it on the blog so here's a link to click on to watch this demo.  There's a short introduction to Converged Infrastructure at the beginning that you can skip (see the bottom right hand side of the page).

My guest on the podcast is LaMills Garrett.  I've known LaMills since 1999 or 2000 when he worked in the lab in Ft. Collins.  He's now our high-end array product manager for the Americas and a very smart guy.  Here's the podcast:

Phew - what to talk about next week on the blog?  I think I have a phew topics up my sleeve!

APEX for VMWare is not officially announced yet. You uncovered the future secrets:smileyhappy:

LOL - You're trying to catch me revealing confidential futures! You're right that APEX for VMware is a (near) future, but we did include it in our HP press release.  I sure hope I don't slip up and you catch me - I'd have to change my Twitter handle to JustAnotherStorageGuyWithoutAJob. :smileytongue:

is this the same as you guys announced for 3PAR?

| ‎01-30-2013 06:58 AM

They are different based on the architecture differences between HP 3PAR and the P9500 XP Disk Array.  I'm working with my 3PAR engineering team and hope to have more to share soon. Stay tuned.

Thanks I'll keep an eye on your blog for it.
