RPCI streamlines backup and recovery with HP StoreOnce and Veeam

I grew up in Batavia, NY - a small city in Western NY that was right in the middle of Buffalo and Rochester and not far from Niagara Falls.  One of the places I would hear about all the time was Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), though when I was growing up it was called Roswell Park Memorial Institute.   RPCI has the distinction of being the first cancer center in the U.S.

So I was excited to see that they are also an HP Storage customer.  RPCI decided to use HP StoreOnce and backup software from my friends at Veeam.  With my focus on Backup, Recovery, and Archive (BURA), I thought this was would be a good customer case study to share with you.   I'll give you some of the highlights from the case study.

Objective

Ensure fast, reliable backup and recovery of critical medical data and patient records.

Approach

Engage HP AllianceOne Partner, Veeam, to deploy comprehensive backup and recovery solution comprised of Veeam Backup & Replication with HP StoreOnce B6200 Backup.

IT Matters

  • Reduced daily backup times by 50%, streamlining IT operations
  • Deduplication shrunk backup data from 85 TB to 15 TB enabling more data to be retained onsite for rapid access
  • Accelerated recovery of virtual machines from three hours to less than 10 minutes, ensuring responsive healthcare delivery and maximizing research productivity
  • Increased performance and minimized business risk with modern disaster recovery
  • Reduced the high costs of complex management of tape libraries

Business Matters

  • Ensured protection of rapidly growing scientific data needed in life-saving medical research
  • Eliminated downtime to ensure continuous availability of vital healthcare systems and services
  • Shrunk backup administration from 3 – 4 hours per day to just minutes, freeing more time for IT to focus on strategic projects that directly support the business
  • Improved patient care and proactive change management

A Few Details

RPCI relies on advanced technologies to ensure efficient, effective patient care, research, and business administration. One major initiative was to maximize use of virtualization, resulting in more than 450 VMware virtual machines (VMs). RPCI stores its production VMs on HP 3PAR StoreServ Storage for maximum efficiency and scalability.  But as the number of VMs grew, backing up this critical environment became increasingly complex and difficult to manage.

Nick Vega, network systems specialist at RPCI, remarks, “We have a very small backup window, from 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM, and being a 24/7 healthcare environment we can’t have any downtime even during those less-busy hours. Not having a way to backup and restore our VMs quickly and reliably was putting the organization at great risk.”

RPCI evaluated several enterprise backup solutions, ultimately selecting backup and replication software from HP AllianceOne partner, Veeam, along with HP StoreOnce B6200 Backup. As an AllianceOne partner, Veeam had exclusive access to HP equipment and resources for development and testing to ensure seamless interoperability and maximum value of its solution for RPCI.

“Veeam is designed specifically for virtualized environments,” Vega explains. “Since Veeam is optimized for StoreOnce and tightly integrated with 3PAR, it was the ideal solution for our environment. We tried other products and couldn’t even get 24 of our VMs backed up. After 48 hours, we just killed the job. The first time we used Veeam and HP StoreOnce, we got all 450 VMs backed up in less than 48 hours.”

Get the whole story

I've only touched on the story of RPCI - you can download the case study and get the rest of the story.  The next time I'm back in my hometown of Batavia, NY, I'll definitely stop by the Anchor Bar and get some Buffalo Style Chicken Wings and I'll stop in at RPCI and hopefully get to see HP 3PAR StoreServ, HP StoreOnce and Veeam in action!

And congratulations to Veeam for being named an AllianceOne Converged Storage partner of the year!  I'm looking forward to seeing them at HP Discover in Barcelona.
