Software-Defined Storage at HP Discover 2014

Headshot1.jpgBy Kate Davis, @KateAtHP, WW Marketing Manager, HP Software-Defined Storage

There’s just a couple of weeks left until HP Discover in Las Vegas. If you haven’t already started perusing the session catalog now’s the time to do that. I wanted to share with you all what sessions and demos we will have that are focused on Software-Defined Storage.

Sessions:

SDS at 10,000 feet

We have two sessions this year that will be in the Discover Theatres. These are located on the Discover Zone show floor itself. There’s seating for about 100 with plenty of standing room so don’t be discouraged if it shows as full when you register.

Sam Bohlin, one of our StoreVirtual product managers, will be doing a session focused on StoreVirtual VSA and what it can do for you. This is a high-level VSA 101 type class. There’s a lot of good info that Sam will cover and a good session to attend to gain some baseline knowledge of our product and in particular the benefits you gain within a virtualized server infrastructure.

DT3850 – Tuesday, 11:30am

The second session will be led by Dale Degen who is our SDS Category manager (also my boss) and will be focusing on the aspects of software-defined storage in general. He has years of experience in this space and will help you understand the aspects of what software-defined storage is, how it works, and why you should consider it.

DT3833 – Tuesday, 12:15pm

Learn from those that have been there

Our main customer-led session will feature Chris Greer who’s a Technical Fellow with FedEx. They’ve been running StoreVirtual appliances and VSA for a few years now and quickly scaled up to 7PB of storage for their virtualized apps. Chris will take you through the journey they experienced when transitioning to a virtualized architecture: the ups and downs, the standardization choices, the products they chose and why. He’ll even cover the new software-defined architecture they are moving to and share the changes that the staff has had to go through as well. It is at 12 on Wednesday which isn’t a great time as it’s stuck right in the middle of lunch (which is served from 11:30 to 1:30pm). If you can, grab a box lunch and join us for a great discussion with plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions of Chris and our SDS experts.

BB3828 – Wednesday, 12pm

We will also have a Discussion Forum session which will feature Brady Wilson, CTO from Opus Interactive, a service provider based in Portland, Oregon. They are an HP Cloud Agile partner and have been building their infrastructure on HP BladeSystem and StoreVirtual storage for many years. Last year they switched from deploying storage appliances to using VSA. The discussion forums occur on the show floor in a smaller setting, what I think of as more of a “fireside chat”. I know this session is already full but there’s plenty of standing room for this 30-minute chat.

DF4633 – Wednesday, 4:30pm

Get the low down on features and functionality

If you’ve been to VMworld in the past few years there’s a good chance you’ve attended a session by our own Aboubacar Diare (HP StoreVirtual virtualization architect) or Eric Siebert (HP Storage virtualization solution manager). These two VMware and storage experts have teamed up to bring you a StoreVirtual VSA technical and competitive session. If you’re interested in getting the technical details on this VSA product as well as the skinny on how it compares to VMware VSAN then this is the session for you.

TB3843 – Thursday, 1:30pm

Learn to build an environment

Do you have an interest in diving into the architectural details? For those of you who like a more nuts and bolts type session, John DeFrees, our SDS Tech Marketing lead, will be focusing his session on how to build an infrastructure with 99.999% high availability and proper data protection featuring StoreVirtual VSA, StoreOnce Backup, SharePoint, and Veeam. This session again is during the lunch hours, so grab a box lunch if you can and join in the fun.

TB3841 – Thursday, 12pm

The bigger picture

For those interested in learning how HP supports a software-defined data center then this panel session is for you. Experts from each of our business units will briefly cover our software-defined portfolio and then it will be opened up for a broader discussion.

PNL3823 – Thursday, 10:30am

Hands-on Labs:

We will be offering hands-on labs for both StoreVirtual VSA and StoreOnce VSA. These are 2-hour sessions where our Tech Marketing experts will help you get hands-on learning of the products. These do have limited space and fill up fast.

StoreVirtual VSA: HOL4006 – Wednesday 8:30am or 11:30am

StoreOnce VSA: HOL4359 – Thursday, 8:30am

Demos in the Discover Zone:

In the HP Storage area on the Discover Zone show floor you’ll find a whole wall of demos dedicated to Software-Defined Storage. There will be four topic areas:

  1. Backup as a Service featuring StoreOnce VSA
  2. StoreVirtual VSA competitive demo
  3. SDS for Remote and Branch offices featuring both StoreVirtual and StoreOnce
  4. OneView for vCenter storage module – Integrated management for 3PAR, StoreVirtual and StoreOnce into VMware vCenter. Come try out this demo and you’ll walk away with free storage.

In addition, you’ll also find SDS in the HP Servers area. Check out the 10 ProLiant models that come with 1TB of StoreVirtual VSA for free.

I’m looking forward to HP Discover and I hope you are to. Please attend the sessions and stop by the demos. The SDS team and I look forward to talking with you and even showing off some new stuff.
