Storage and the Tampa Bay Rays

My last blog post was a podcast with Juan Ramirez, Senior Director of IT for the Tampa Bay Rays, discussing how Juan and the Rays use information technology in their business.  Today I have another podcast with Juan but focused on storage and their decision to replace their previous SAN (from a competitor) with an HP 3PAR.

Here's the podcast with Juan:

If you rather download this as a podcast, right click here and save the MP3 file. You can also subscribe to my podcast on iTunes - go to the iTunes store and search for "Around the Storage Block" or you can open this link and click on the "View in iTunes" button under my picture.

While visiting Juan at Tropicana Field, he took me into his data center and showed me his infrastructure.  I grabbed my video camera and got video of this; here's that video.

Get more info on 3PAR

Here are a couple of links where you can learn more about HP 3PAR:

  • The starting point is always the 3PAR product page
  • I have LOTS of blog posts focused on 3PAR, many with demo videos, technical whitepapers, and I think a great place to go deeper.  In fact, Juan told me in the podcast that he had been reading ATSB for a few years and it helped him learn about HP 3PAR.

Closing thoughts

Again, I owe Juan and the Rays a huge thank you for inviting me and my son to visit them - not only was it professionally fulfilling, my son and I made some great memories that we'll always have.  I'm only sad that the Rays got knocked out of the playoff hunt and a return to Tampa Bay for a playoff game is off the table.

As you say that is some serious noise inside his room. Amused by his comment, 'I love that rack'. - don't we all.

Nice to see what kind of storage quality you can get with serious money. If only we all had his resources.

@Don - me too!

@Storage Letchworth - if you listen to what Juan says, he didn't have big budget.  I don't know what he paid but I guess for customers, it comes down to how important is data to your business.  Some customers try to cook up storage solutions by using drives inside a server and free open source software while others pay hundreds of thousands of dollars to have bullet proof/disaster proof storage. Also, what may not have come through (because I edited the video) was that these were custom racks that Juan worked with the HP team to have work with 3PAR.  He really did love his racks.

Around 12:15 into the podcast.

"The reality is people dont realise how good this thing is (3PAR) and how easy it is to manage. It's just great knowing that you have quality within your infrastructure that is not going to cost you an arm and a leg, and is not going to cost you your job."

Says it all really.
