The BURA (Backup, Recovery, and Archive) Challenge

BURA.  A topic I've been hearing a lot about lately.  It's not an entirely new topic but when I searched on Wikipedia to see what it had to say, it doesn't even have it's own page, at least not the BURA as an IT topic.

From the title of my blog, you know what I'm talking about - Backup, Recovery, and Archive.  It's not a topic I've talked about enough here so I think it's time to pick it up.

In fact, I was recently talking to Jason Buffington, Senior Analyst with ESG, who I've done a webcast focused on tape and podcast focused on disk-based backup. I was surprised to hear from Jason that according to customer research ESG did, 3 of the top 10 IT programs in 2013 are focused on BURA modernization *.   In that same research, they learned that 39% of storage professionals said that data backup and recovery is a business challenge and 27% said it is a top IT priority.

The BURA Challenge!

I was talking to one of our BURA-focused solution managers and he was talking me through some of the issues customers face with backup, recovery, and archive.  He was using slides and when I saw "BURA Challenges", my mind immediately went to a game show.  And so the idea of doing the BURA Challenge ChalkTalk was born.

Before I show you the ChalkTalk, let me highlight a few things without giving away the BURA Challenge.   As the volume, variety, and velocity of data continues to accelerate, backup and recovery is not adapting fast enough. Three technology shifts are fueling this:

  • Big Data is throwing more information at traditional backup systems than they can handle—systems that were not designed to handle the new mix of structured and unstructured data
  • Mobility and Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) are introducing new access devices with more data located at the edge than ever before—along with the expectation of instant access to data and applications.
  • The cloud, the software-defined data center, and ITaaS all make pervasive use of virtualization, which is throwing a wrench into traditional backup systems and processes.

The reality is that traditional backup and archive is unsustainable, consisting of disparate point solutions that can’t keep up and it's a topic I'll take up over the coming weeks.  So in my best Monty Hall voice (sure hope at least a few of you remember him), "Who wants to play the BURA Challenge?"

Check back over the next few weeks and I want to encourage you to sign up for our announcement live stream from HP Discover.  The theme is Changing Nothing Risks Everything.  We're giving away some cool Beats Audio headsets to people that register soon, so click on the image to read more and sign up.

You've really put a BURA under my saddle with this talk!  Incidentally, why do you call these "chalk talks" when they are clearly more of a whiteboard talk? :/

Bradley - your puns crack me up.  Ok, I'm just being nice! :smileytongue:

I called them a ChalkTalk because so many others were calling what they did whiteboard videos.  And as you know, I'm unique, so I wanted to create a unique brand for my videos.  I also wanted to use that idea of a coach talking to his team talking football Xs and Os.  When I played football 35 years ago, our coaches still used chalkboards so it all made sense in my mind.  Since you live in the Boise area, you probably also recognize the Boise State fight song I use as my intro music.  You did notice that didn't you?  Maybe I need to take you with me to a Boise State game!  Thanks Bro!

Looking for available training on BURA for our SA's - what is would be the best courses to take?

@VirgAllen - I don't have great insight there but I know with our focus on BURA at HP, there's lots of training for partners with more coming.  So not sure what you're looking for (customer, partner, technical, etc) but if you give me a bit more info, I'll try to help.

@CalvinZ - We were looking for technical training for our Solution Architects on HP's BURA. I have searched the Partner Portal for all training and have found StoreOnce;StoreAll and StoreEver.
