VAAI Demo at VMworld

CartoonCalvin100X100.JPG By Calvin Zito, aka @HPStorageGuy

Wow - I know, a rather simple adjective but it's the word that best describes VMworld 2010 last week.  That and Sleepless in San Francisco.  I slept for about 90 minutes the night before I flew to San Francisco and that ended up being a lot of sleep for my four day stay at VMworld.

I love the event because it's where the social media virtualization and storage community come together.  But this article isn't about the nerd bonding at VMworld but a demo video I wanted to share with you.  In our HP booth at VMworld 2010, we had a demo to show VAAI in action.  I talked to our P4000 product manager Adam Carter who did a short demo for me.  Here's the video of that demo:

I have other videos and more to say about VMworld so check back over the next week or so for more.

He's talking about SAN/IQ 9. When will that version be released? and is there  a whatsnew document?

Marcel - Indeed, he's talking SANiQ 9.  We have been public about VAAI coming with SANiQ 9 but not about the date as HP doesn't usually give dates or details on futures.  Stay tuned - it won't be long.  If you need more specifics, you should talk to your HP rep.  Thanks for asking!

So what about people with HP EVA's?  There appears to be very little information on whether, for instance, the EVA4400 will support VAAI and when.  I got some friends of mine pushing their EVA 4400 to the literal brink of what it can handle, so any offload that would remove unnecessary I/O would be huge.

SAN IQ 9.0 is now released. Is there a plugin needed to install on vcenter to use VAAI ? If yes, where can I download the plugin ? Thanks for your help

If you have SAN iQ/ 9.0, you don't have to do anything. It works out of the box.  I hope to have a couple of vlogs and podcast talking about it soon so stay tuned.  Thanks for asking!

Does the VAAI integration address the issue with crash consistent snapshots.  It is my understanding that the p4000 was not able to quiesce the VM's, which essentially leaves the snapshots in a crash state if you were ever to need to recover them.
