What Paul McCartney taught me about convergence

By Lee Johns, Director of Converged Storage - @StorageOlogist on Twitter

At HP Discover 2011 in Las Vegas, we unveiled our Converged Storage products and plans.

HP Converged Storage is:

  • Built on common modular platforms, that leverage HP ProLiant and BladeSystem DNA and deliver common device instrumentation.
  • Scale-out storage software providing non-disruptive and independent scaling for NAS, SAN and backup / deduplication on virtual or physical platforms
  • Converged management, not just for storage but to enable orchestration of IT as a Service (IAAS) across the entire datacenter stack.

This combination will change the old world of monolithic and siloed storage and deliver the next generation of storage for our mobile, connected and Instant-On World.

So what does this have to do with Paul McCartney?  Well, Paul gave a private concert for all of the HP attendees.  Like me, many went in wondering if his performance would stand the test of time but in fact he gave an incredible performance.  In 2.5 hours he delivered one of the best concerts I have seen and leveraging songs from his entire career.

The Beatles started 50 years ago in Liverpool.  When they started, music was written for artists by songwriters.  Groups like the Beatles did not really exist.  They changed all that.  Through some luck, they brought together 4 incredible talents into a single band that wrote their own material and changed the face of music as we know it.  Paul was a driver of change.  And he’s again a change agent as Paul and his media company MPL Communications partner with HP --  at the heart of the McCartney digital library is an HP Converged Infrastructure solution.

Sometimes the time is right for big change.  For the music industry it was 50 years ago when Paul and his band mates converged to change everything.  For storage the time is now and HP is bringing together 3PAR, LeftHand, IBRIX and StoreOnce to change the storage and IT landscape.
