HP Storage in South Africa - and a few wild animals!

P1030646.JPGTo say I was a little excited about being invited to speak at a customer event by our HP Storage team in South Africa is a bit understated.  When they first asked me, I asked them "do you really mean me"?  Well, they did and I'm back from an unbelievable trip.  In this post, I'll briefly talk about all the fun I had, point to video and pictures I have of my weekend at Kruger National Park and share a podcast I did with Aptronics, an HP partner I met with in Johannesburg.

Planes, trains, and automobiles

Ok - the only train I took was between terminals at an airport but it was a very long trip for me to get to entrance of Kruger National Park in South Africa.  42 hours to be exact.  I didn't pay attention to the itinerary I booked and had a 7 hour layover in San Francisco.  That ended up being a good thing because I did get a bunch of things done preparing for the event in Johannesburg.

I flew into Johannesburg, South Africa and caught a small commuter plane to Nelspruit where I rented a car and headed for the Crocodile Bridge entrance into Kruger National Park.

Update on HP OneView

OneView.pngIt's been a bit over a week since I was at VMware PEX but I'm back in San Francisco and thought it would be a good time for another post on the topic. I have another podcast I did at PEX, this time talking to Steeve Daigle, who manages integration with HP OneView within VMware environments.  Steeve and I talked about what's new with OneView and we talked about a new demo video on hp.com as well as a blog post that has more.   I'm in transit to South Africa so I'll let the podcast do the talking.

To listen to the podcast and get the links to the demo videos, go to the full blog post.

Introducing ATSB ShortTake: Converged Transceiver

ATSB ShortTake 1.pngJust over a year ago, I introduced our HP Storage ChalkTalks - you can click on the link to see all the blog posts I have that include a ChalkTalk or you can find them all on my YouTube playlist at hpstorage.me/HPChalkTalks.  Now it's time for another new format - something I'm calling Around the Storage Block ShortTake.

What is an ATSB ShortTake?

I'm asking our experts in HP Storage to record themselves presenting on a topic - could be a product, solution, or program - with a goal of keeping them at 5 minutes.  I'll have the audio as a podcast and you can get the slides on our HP B2B SlideShare account.

First ever ShortTake

The first ever ShortTake is a brand new product - a new transceiver.  Normally, a transceiver isn't very exciting but today we're introducing the first converged SAN and LAN transceiver, the HP StoreFabric 16Gb FC/10GbE Converged SFP+.  Instead of telling you all about it here, I'll let you listen to the ShortTake and check out the slides.

A bit more on the ConvergedSystem 300 and 700

My last post, I had a podcast I did at VMware Partner Exchange giving a 30,000 foot view of the HP ConvergedSystem.  In this post, I'll come down a bit from the stratosphere and give you a bit more detail about a couple of the products in the portfolio.  The product managers for the ConvergedSystem 300 and 700 were in the booth and I have a couple of videos talking to them. Let's start with the entry level ConvergedSystem 300.

ConvergedSystem 300

Here's the description I found on an hp.com page:  If you have 50-300 VMs, the ConvergedSystem 300 is a fit — built on modular, standards-based infrastructure blocks that help reduce initial acquisition costs. It will arrive at your site pre-configured and pre-tested, ready to run. Even better, we’ll quote and configure your system in 20 minutes, move it to production in 20 days, and lower entry price by 25% so you can use it everywhere.*

See the full blog post for more on the ConvergedSystem 300 and 700.

ConvergedSystem for Virtualization

ConvergedSystem.jpgI spent the last couple of days at VMware Partner Exchange doing a few interviews and getting some content that I think you'll find useful.  I hope to have time to post most of it in the next few days.

I'll start today with a podcast I did with Jeff Carlat.  Jeff is the Director of Product Management for our Converged System organization.  That's the new organization headed up by former HP Storage marketing VP Tom Joyce.  Jeff lead a session we had at VMware PEX and this podcast with him is about 5 minutes long and packed with some great insights.  Go to the full blog post to listen to the podcast.

To download the podcast, right click here and save the MP3 file. You can also subscribe to my podcast on iTunes - go to the iTunes store and search for "Around the Storage Block" or you can open this link and click on the "View in iTunes" button under my picture.

More on HP Insight Control for VMware vCenter

With VMware Partner Exchange this week, I'm in a VMware state of mind!  My last blog post had a demo of the latest version of HP Insight Control Storage Module for VMware vCenter - in that video I showed you the installation and a flyby of some of the basic functions we have.

In this blog I have another demo video that shows how you can use Insight Control Storage Module to solve a problem of over-provisioned storage that prevents a VM from starting (and solving that problem).  I also show how we can change the source and target with Peer Persistence. So here's that demo video

HP Storage at VMware PEX and a Insight Control demo

Next week is VMware Partner Exchange (PEX) and I'm really looking forward to it.  You've heard me talk about how much I value being with the technology community and the virtualization community is one of the ones I enjoy the most.  In fact, my passion for social media really took off after I attended a VMworld a few years ago and was asked to be a guest on a VMware Community Podcast.

I'm guessing of everyone reading this, only a few of you are going to PEX since it is a partner only event.  So for those of you that aren't VMware (or HP) partners, I have a pretty cool demo video I just finished.  This is the latest version of HP Insight Control for VMware vCenter.  There's a free HP Storage plug-in that works with vCenter as well called HP Insight Control Storage Module and there's a new version of it, v 7.3.0.  This demo shows me installing Insight Control and giving a quick tour of it.
