By Kate Davis, @KateAtHP, WW Marketing Manager, HP Software-Defined Storage

Even after two years of talking about Software-Defined Storage, basic questions are still being asked within the IT community about what it is and what is does. So I thought I’d share a couple of items that may help answer some questions you may have: A new IDC brief with the Top 5 questions customers are asking about SDS and a recent video interview at HP Discover with our Marketing VP, Craig Nunes.

HP StoreVirtual Hybrid Storage drives stronger price per performance over competitors

By Jessica Burton, Worldwide Product Marketing Manager, HP StoreVirtual

StoreVirtual_productJ.jpgEarlier this month, IOmark and Evaluator Group released audited benchmark results for HP StoreVirtual 4335 Hybrid Storage. According to Russ Fellows, a senior partner with the Evaluator Group, “HP StoreVirtual performed very well on a per node basis and with its scale-out capabilities is able to scale up performance and capacity linearly to meet increased virtual machine needs. We have tested other hybrid arrays without HP’s advanced functionality or scale. The StoreVirtual 4335 delivered 20-to-25% better price/performance than competing systems.” Check out more benchmark details in the blog.

HPStorageGuy checking in from Germany

I decided to do a quick check-in from Europe.  I'm writing this post from Heidelberg, Germany not far from Mannheim and tomorrow's HP World Tour stop.  I only speak or understand a little German so I don't expect to follow along with the presentations but I do hope to do a few videos or podcasts with customers and partners attending.

Last week, I was in Denmark where I made a couple of stops.  First, I stopped in the historic city of Helsingør.  My family and I had a great day visiting the city which is home to Kronborg Castle - where William Shakespeare's play Hamlet took place.  My family and I toured the castle took the "Hamlet Tour" where a guide and I it so happened that the Kommune Helsingør is an HP 3PAR customer and I did a video with them.  It was my son's 15th birthday and as a "birthday present", I brought him as my camera man - so I'm looking forward to coming home to edit the video he took for me.

9 top reasons to choose HP StoreOnce Backup Solutions

By Ashwin Shetty, Product Marketing, HP Storage

StoreOnce_308x220_tcm245_1534335_tcm245_1515474_tcm245-1534335.jpgLast week at HP Discover we had made some very significant announcements for HP storage and for the HP StoreOnce platform, including Federated Catalyst for HP StoreOnce 6500, expanded ISV ecosystem and HP Integrity Plus Assurance for end-to-end security.  So, now the questions arise: Why do our customers deploy HP StoreOnce for data protection requirements? What differentiates our solution as compared to the rest of the backup appliance vendors? I think it is time we take a closer look at and make sure it’s not just a bunch of smoke and mirrors and delve into what you are really looking for when it comes to data protection.

HP OneView v 1.1 demo from HP Discover

At the HP Discover press conference, SVP and GM of Converged Systems Tom Joyce had a great demo of HP OneView v 1.1.  I was able to capture it with my video camera and thought it was worth sharing.  It's a very quick flyby of OneView but this did a gerat job of making it real for me.  Here's the video:

ExactTarget and HP 3PAR StoreServ at HP Discover

Pete Robinson is from ExactTarget and I was able to talk to Pete about the experience he's had with HP 3PAR StoreServ at ExactTarget.  This is a great case study in how HP 3PAR really is a game changer.  Pete talks about the challenges ExactTarget faced using traditional arrays.  This podcast is definitely worth 6 minutes of your time!

HP Discover wrap up – so many storage sessions so little time

By Melissa Elicker, Social Media Editor, HP Storage

Now it’s not a very formal survey, but according to the customer gentleman in the elevator who said he’s been to multiple Discover events before, “This one was the best ever.”  I tend to agree. Here, from my view, are some of the highlights – from storage news to quick recaps of sessions I attended on Wednesday and Thursday, plus a fond farewell (for now) to our Glove and Boots friends.

And congratulations to our partner, iTernity

iTernity.JPGOn Wednesday, iTernity was recognized with the 2014 HP AllianceOne Partner of the Year Award in the Storage Category. iTernity is also a member of the HP Data Agile Partner Program. The program enables our partners to learn about the HP Backup, Recovery and Archive portfolio and test and certify their applications in a dedicated HP lab environment and take advantage of unique marketing opportunities. Program members also have access to specialized trainings and technical assistance.

Proving HP 3PAR Tier-1 with a 99.9999% high availability guarantee

Wow!  What a whirlwind HP Discover has been.  I'm sitting at the Las Vegas airport writing my last post from HP Discover - and it's an important one that I've only briefly mentioned.  The HP 3PAR StoreServ news was very exciting but I didn't want you to miss what I think is a very important announcement.  My time is short with my flight boarding in just a couple of minutes so for this news, I'll let the ChalkTalk I've done do all the talking.

Making backup easier with HP StoreOnce

I'm falling behind keeping you updated on things at Discover so I'll keep this short.  The week before HP Discover, an article appeared in the Register where an EMC Data Domain executive was asked "Why has EMC never provided global deduplication across Data Domain boxes".  The answer to me was startling: "To date, we've not seen a need".

Not seen a need?  The answer tells me that EMC wants their customers to buy into siloed pools of backup, scale-up systems with no high availability, fragmented deduplication architectures, and it all adds up to complex management.

WIth the announcement of Federated Catalyst, HP StoreOnce 6500 - our multi-node scaleout backup system - now has multi-node system wide deduplication.  You now can have a single pool of storage across the multi-node system with system wide deduplication.  The ChalkTalk I have tells the story as well as other StoreOnce news related to backup ISVs so check it out.

Saying YES to change. Glove and Boots lead the way.

By Melissa Elicker, Social Media Editor, HP Storage

GBblue.JPGIn Vegas, great performers come in pairs. There’s Penn & Teller. Seigfried and Roy. Donnie & Marie. And, as of Monday, Glove and Boots. Our famous furry friends were out in force today at HP Discover, challenging attendees to do everything from arm wrestling, to taking on an 820-foot high roller coaster. These and other ways to show ways people are saying yes to change with HP Storage. Check it out!

If you haven’t seen Mario and Fafa—the groundhog and red furry guys from the Internet sensation Glove and Boots—yet, you will. Here are some highlights from our Discover Day 1 adventures.

HP 3PAR StoreServ All Flash gets dedupe

I'm going to have to pace myself this week!  HP Discover hasn't formerly started and I'm beyond excited.  We held our press conference yesterday where David Scott shared our storage news with the press and bloggers in attendance.  My previous blog post and ChalkTalk gave you the high level snapshot of the news and in this post, I want to give you a bit more detail on the HP 3PAR news.

I think the starting point is the ChalkTalk on our HP 3PAR news: deduplication for our all-flash 7450.

Blockbuster storage news from HP Discover

It's time to kickoff another HP Discover with some blockbuster storage news.  I have been looking forward to the news we have today for a while!  I think storage industry watchers come to expect innovation from the storage startups - expectations for legacy vendors like HP are low.  WIth the news I have to share, I'm glad to show you that innovation is alive and well in HP Storage! So let me jump right into it.

I have a bit more details on the blog and I'll have a lot more during the week at Discover so be sure to check it out

Meet Glove and Boots and don't get slapped in the face!

mario 3par fafa_2sm.pngWhat do nachos, a time machine, and a storage-eating monster have to do with HP 3PAR StoreServ? Allow me to introduce my guests, Fafa and Mario, puppet stars of the Glove and Boots video blog. The two are joining forces with HP to help us paint a picture of what it would be like to live in a world without the Tier-1 capabilities of HP Storage. To quote Glove and Boots, “Everything would seem just a little bit worse”.

3PAR's resilient architecture means that all your applications can get Tier-1 capabilities, whether you’ve got budget for midrange or high-end storage or even if you are looking for all-flash performance in mission-critical environments—one architecture does it all. With EMC, you  manage different workloads on different storage architectures.

Data protection: one size doesn’t fit all

By Srikanth Venkataseshu, Worldwide Solutions Marketing Manager, BURA, HP Storage

If you have been following our BURA Sunday blogs for the past few weeks, you may have noticed that we’ve been discussing a lot about modernizing data protection using HP StoreOnce backup, our disk-based deduplication solution. If not done right, data protection leaves a big chasm around IT’s ability to meet the SLAs required to fulfill business objectives. With days to go before HP Discover begins, I want to take you all on a slightly different journey – along a path where we view data protection from an application and data life cycle management perspective.

The increasing cost of data breaches drive demand for StoreEver tape encryption solutions

By Simon Watkins, Worldwide Tape Product Marketing Manager, HP Storage

LTO6_800x150.jpgDoes the threat of data breaches keep you up at night?
Lost or stolen backup or archive tapes can interrupt your day-to-day business operations and leave you vulnerable to legal sanctions and penalties, as well as the loss of customers and brand equity. Government and industry regulations as well as good business practices therefore require that the sensitive and private information your organization stores on backup and archive tapes—including financial data and customer information—is protected from unauthorized disclosure or theft.  Today, I'm blogging about the HP solution. We offer a range of StoreEver tape data encryption solutions that seamlessly integrate into your existing backup, recovery, and archive processes, meet your individualized encryption requirements, and thus help your organization secure data on tape.
