The best big data presentation I've ever seen

Noumenal_BigData.pngI saw the best presentation I've ever seen on big data at the Nth Generation Symposium last week.  The session was delivered by Marc Demarest, Founder & Principal of Noumenal, Inc.  Marc didn't talk about big data from a vendor perspective but from a customer perspective.  After Marc's session, I grabbed him before he could get out off the stage and asked to do a podcast with him, which he graciously did.  This is a fantastic overview of his session.  This is a fantastic overview of his session.

In the podcast, we focused on a definition Marc used for big data that focuses on six dimensions:

Live on ATSB podcast: HP LeftHand and a special guest

TalkShoe podcast.pngI've wanted to do a live Around the Storage Block podcast for a long and finally decided to give it a go.  With VMworld around the corner, I thought an interesting topic to cover would be our HP LeftHand VSA.  My guests will include  HP LeftHand product marketing manager Kate Davis, a couple of long time HP LeftHand experts, Tim Doering and Dale Degen and a special guest (hint: he's known as @VMDoug).

Here are the specific details you'll need to join:

  • Day and time: We'll have our live ATSB podcast on Tuesday August 14 at noon EDT, 9 AM PDT.  For those of you outside of the U.S., I'm sure you can do time zone translation.
  • Phone number: U.S. toll number only: (724) 444-7444 Call ID 69339
  • URL: You can listen online at http://www.talkshoe.com/talkshoe/web/talkCast.jsp?masterId=69339&cmd=tc.  Even if you plan to dial in, you might consider joining online as there is a chat feature.

VMware's software-defined data center

P1100632.jpgI'm at the Nth Generation Symposium in Anaheim and there's been some fantastic content here - and of course one of my goals on ATSB is to bring you content from others. On Wednesday, Kit Colbert, Senior Strategist, Office of the CTO at VMware had a keynote titled "The Software-Defined Data Center: The Foundation of Enterprise IT.  I got a few minutes with Kit before he flew back to Palo Alto and have a very interesting podcast with him.   When I'm back home and have time to come up for breath, I'll add some more notes about our discussion but for now since the next sessions have started, I just wanted to give you the podcast so here it is.

Branding and IT Marketing

P1100537.JPGLast week I talked about going to the Nth Generation Symposium in Anaheim. It kicked off yesterday and is now in full swing.  One of the yesterday's sessions really caught my attention - being a marketing guy and working in technology.  The session was titled Branding & Marketing IT: Take Control of Your "Brand" - If You Don't Others Will!" The presenter was Joel Manfredo, Senior IT Strategist.  Joel presented last year at Nth Generation as an end user and this year he's back as a consultant.

I grabbed Joel after his session and we did a podcast talking about it.  Interesting stuff!
