Customers Share Their Secrets - UC Irvine

I have been holding out on a couple customer videos I did at Nth Symposium.  I want to share one today.  And with all our recent talk about the 1TB of free StoreVirtual VSA, it's timely to share this video with you.

The University of California at Irvine has been a long time HP Storage customer. I met Kazuto Okayasu at Nth Symposium a few years ago and I've enjoyed talking to him about storage every year at the event. This year, I asked Kaz to do a video with me to talk about his environment and he graciously said yes.  It's a great story - UC Irvine is deep into virtualization and Kaz talks about how they used StoreVirtual VSA to set up a multi-site SAN to have site resiliency.  The video with Kaz is short and speaks for itself so here it is.

Catching up on Fibre Channel with HP and Brocade

One of the conversations I had at the recent Nth Symposium was with AJ Casamento from Brocade.  HP and Brocade have partnered in storage networking for a long time – probably about as long as AJ and I have worked in the industry!

Here’s a summary of what AJ and I discussed:

  • Looking deeper into the storage network stack with Fabric Vision
  • 16Gb Fibre Channel – ideal for low latency and all-flash
  • Optical infrastructure with Clearlink
  • When is the right time to look at Gen5 16Gb FC?

Here’s the video with AJ – definitely an interesting discussion on the topic of storage networking.

Focusing on Backup - with a podcast and video interview

I've had a busy week but want to cap it off by giving you a really good podcast and video that I've done over the last few weeks. And while it's not BURA Sunday, I am on the topic of backup and recovery with the podcast and video.  The podcast is with Rick Vanover from Veeam, so go to the full blog post to get that.

While at Nth Symposium, there was a really good keynote from Richard Tengdin from Nth where he gave some great advice about keeping your backup modernized.  Nth was kind enough to give me a booth in the expo area and I did an interview with Richard there.  Here's the interview.

The BURA team here has been doing a great job with their BURA Sunday blog posts so be sure to check out their blogs.  It really is great having a team of people helping with great information on the blog.

The Game Show Network Games and Big Data

Nth Symposium was a few weeks ago and one of the keynotes was delivered by Portman Wills.  Portman is the Chief Data Scientist at the Game Show Networks Games.  Portman discussed how they log every action taken by gamers and with HP Vertica, they use that information to improve their users' experience and drive higher revenue.

For me, the keynote did a great job of making big data real and specifically how HP Vertica is used to get the insights that Portman discussed.  So Portman graciously said yes to my request to talk to him (he had a flight shortly after his keynote ended) and I think you'll find this as interesting as I did.

Data encryption and key management 101

Just a short post this morning to point you to a video I did at Nth Symposium.  My friends at Nth were gracious enough to give me a booth on the show floor and from there I did a number of video interviews.  I've already posted one I did talking about HP Storage at VMworld as well as another talking about HP ConvergedSystem.  In this video I hit the topic of data encryption and key management.

Albert Biketi is the General Manager of security products at HP Atalla, a part of HP Software focused on security.  Albert had emailed me recently and it was a great opportunity for me to learn more about data encryption and more specifically key management.
