The market leader and the market newbie: a Software-Defined Storage comparison

By Kate Davis, @KateAtHP, WW Marketing Manager, HP Software-Defined Storage

Market_Piechart.pngIt’s been a year since I wrote my first article on Software-Defined Storage. At that time we were at the definition stage – what does the Software-Defined Storage (SDS) term mean, and what products fit that category. Since then, the term SDS has become widely known and accepted but what's been missing is the market data, but Wikibon fixed that last Friday as they released their first report of the Server SAN market.

What else has been missing?  A blog from me that offers a compare of HP StoreVirtual VSA and VMware VSAN. Well, the wait is over.

Software-Defined Storage: where, how and why we’re taking the lead

HP_StoreVirtual_VSA_RGB_blue_NT.pngIt’s a new year and I have a new job to kick it off. I’ve been the worldwide marketing manager for LeftHand, now StoreVirtual, for the past three years and now I am focused full time on VSA and Software-Defined Storage (SDS). It’s going to be a busy year as we move forward to make sure you understand the full benefits that SDS and our VSA products bring to your business. We kicked this effort off with the November announcement of the Unlock your Storage program, where customers who purchase any of the eligible models of the HP ProLiant Gen8 server line receive a free 1TB license of StoreVirtual VSA.

Momentum is building fast, making this the ideal time to revisit our products and leadership accomplishments when it comes to Software-Defined Storage.

HP Tech Talk talks software-defined storage and StoreVirtual VSA

Last May, I had a blog post telling you about HP Tech Talk, a new weekly show we're doing with Andy McCaskey from SDRNews.com.  The show covers topics across storage, cloud, servers, and networking.  I fell a bit behind and didn't line up storage guests for Andy to interview over the last couple months but I finally got on the ball and Andy posted the latest HP Tech Talk with Kate Davis, giving an update on HP StoreVirtual Storage and software-defined storage.

Here's the interview Andy did with Kate - it's about 12 minutes long.

Delivering Software-Defined Storage to the masses—for free

HP_StoreVirtual_VSA3.jpgHappy New Year! I know it’s November, but at HP, November marks the start of a new fiscal year, new opportunities and new program rollouts. It’s exciting! Better yet, I get to announce to you a new program that is aimed at deploying the new style of IT through the extension of Software-Defined Storage into virtualized environments.

Here’s the big news: Effective November 1, 2013, a variety of ProLiant Gen8 server models now come with a free 1TB license for StoreVirtual VSA software.

What this means is if you purchase one of the following ProLiant Gen8 rack, tower, or blade servers you can go and download the StoreVirtual VSA software and a 1TB capacity license for free. Servers include: BL420c, BL460c, BL465c, BL660c, DL320e Gen8 v2, DL360p, DL380p, DL385p, DL560, and ML350p

Customers speak about software-defined storage

I was searching around the internet tonight and bumped into a few videos that I want share with you from VMworld.  Software-defined storage was a big theme.  And despite the skeptics, it's gaining traction.

The first video is an interview that Dave Vellante did with Eric Hulber and Brady Wilson from HP StoreVirtual customer Opus Interactive.  This was a really interesting discussion where Eric and Brady talked about their business providing IT as a Service and Infrastructure as a Service (as a private cloud).  I love something that Brady says here, "It (software-defined storage) comes across as a buzzword initially but like cloud its the way things are going.  It makes sense".   Dave also asked Brady about their transition from the appliance-based StoreVirtual to StoreVirtual VSA.  Brady's one-word answer was priceless - "effortless".

Check out the full blog post for a few more videos including one with FedEx, talking about the topic.
