Adaptive Backup and Recovery from HP

spellicy.jpgLast week many of my colleagues around the world came together in Phoenix for what was a really incredible week of celebrating our accomplishments and planning on how we continue the success.  One of the people there was Stephen Spellicy, my fellow vExpert and the director of product management in HP Autonomy for data protection solutions.  There's a lot of collaboration between our teams as we have a strong focus on Backup, Recovery, and Archive (BURA) solutions.

I took the opportunity to talk to Stephan about the solutions he manages and to learn about something I've been hearing a lot lately, Adaptive Backup and Recovery.  In the podcast Stephan talks about the three primary products in his portfolio, discusses how HP StoreOnce and Data Protector are working closely together and then gives an overview of Adaptive Backup and Recovery - a topic that I'll talk to him again as we get closer to HP Discover in June.

The Value of HP StoreEver for Archive

By Simon Watkins, Worldwide Tape Product Marketing Manager, HP Storage

SW.JPGArchiving is a key use case for tape.  But how does archive actually differ from backup?  And how can HP StoreEver tape archive solutions help you reduce costs, save time and reduce risk?

Keep in m ind that archive is NOT backup! It’s important to understand that archive and backup are distinct processes with different objectives—each one imposing different requirements on the storage systems that they utilize.

Simply StoreIT solutions for Data Protection and Virtualization

I started this week with an overview of the announcements we made at our HP Global Partner Conference. In that post, I pointed you to the updated Simply StoreIT Overview ChalkTalk.  I'll end GPC week with one final update of interest to small and midsized businesses.

HP Simply StoreIT is for SMBs with a focus on solutions for virtualization, backup and data protection, file sharing, Microsoft Exchange and SQL Server.  The goal is to help you, via channel partners, quickly find the storage solution that best fits your business.

The foundation of Simply StoreIT is to identify where you are in your IT journey: starting out, building momentum, or expanding your business.  And armed with that information, its easy to determine what  product can best address your needs.  I'd suggest if you didn't see the overview ChalkTalk I mentioned at the start, you take a look at that.  Also, I'll point you to the Simply StoreIT program overview (PDF) if you want to learn more.

You will be interested in the free "Get Protected Guarantee" Backup Assessment.  It does require registration but I think it's worth it.   When you take the assessment it includes:

  • Backup window details
  • Successful vs. failed backup details
  • Retention times
  • Daily data backed up

Moving beyond traditional backup and archiving

I hosted a webcast on BrightTalk recently titled "Moving beyond traditional backup & archiving" - and I wanted to make that webcast broadly available.  In order to watch it on BrightTalk, you have to have a BrightTalk account so I wanted to give you that webcast here.  So here's what I did - I have the slides I used from the webcast on SlideShare and the audio is on my podcast - and both posted here.

The first 15 minutes or so of the webcast is Jason Buffington, a Sr Analyst with ESG sharing some really good research around what customers are doing today with backup.  Jason has a ton of experience in backup and has some great insights.

The last part of the webcast features David Scott, SVP and GM of HP Storage talking a bit about our portfolio.  You'll hear David talk about the HP StoreOnce portfolio, focused on backup, and HP StoreAll, for archiving.

Backup, Recovery, and Archive (BURA) updates from HP Discover

If you were paying attention before HP Discover, I had started talking about the BURA Challenge.  And if you watched the discussions coming from HP Discover, BURA was a hot topic as we totally refreshed both the StoreOnce and StoreAll product lines.  Jake Ludington was in the Blogger Lounge doing short video interviews.  I asked Patrick Osborne to walk through the announcements with Jake.  Patrick is the Director of Product Management and Marketing for StoreOnce, StoreAll, and StoreEver and does a great job giving a summary of the BURA news in under 9 minutes! He and Jake got pretty geeky talking about StoreAll Express Query.

Hopefully you saw the ChalkTalks I did on each of these product enhancements but here they are again for you:

There's also a short video with David Scott talking BURA - so go to the blog to see the full post.
