Now's the time for hyper-convergence

With technology there’s always opportunity to advance, creating an ongoing evolution of components and products. Once in a while, we get a unique opportunity to advance multiple technologies at once – when software, hardware, and customer requirements all converge and we surge into the future. We have hit that sweet spot today, and can advance data center design by bringing server, storage and management components together within a single platform – this is what hyper-convergence is all about. To help you adopt a New Style of IT with a solution that evokes the elements of simplicity and efficiency, we now offer a hyper-converged platform portfolio for VMware environments. Here are all the details.

Hello hyper-converged with HP StoreVirtual

With VMworld Barcelona in full swing, I have some news to share today. HP is announcing a new hyper-converged solution, HP Converged System 200-HC StoreVirtual, that will help customers rapidly deploy virtualized environment like never before.

The hyper-converged CS 200 with StoreVirtual VSA is a virtualization platform that seamlessly combines compute and storage. It is designed to simplify the deployment of applications - from mixed virtualized workloads to business-critical applications to virtual desktops - with all-inclusive enterprise class features and performance. This exciting new product allows you to go from power-on to provisioning within 15 minutes. I've got a ShortTake with Jessica Burton and we'll be talking more about it on ATSB in the coming days and weeks. For now, here's the ShortTake.

You can get more information by going to hp.com/go/hyper-converge note the page might not be live until around 6 AM EDT today. Also check out the live video from VMworld where Director of Product Management Rob Strechay will be presenting on today at 11:30 AM Barcelona time, 5:30 AM EDT (ok - that's early!) and Wednesday at 2:30 PM Barcelona time, 8:30 AM EDT.  I have a blog post from a couple of days ago that has a live video feed from VMworld where you can watch so check it out.

HP ConvergedSystem Update

I'm recently back from Nth Symposium and the video interviews that I did there are starting to role in.  One of the discussions I had was with my long-time HP friend LaMills Garrett.  I like to kid LaMills - when I first met him in the late 90's, he was a lab engineer in draedlocks.  But he was also one of the most business saavy engineers I've ever worked with so I'm not surprised that he's now a leader in the ConvergedSystem Americas team.

During the discussion LaMills talked about the latest with HP ConvergedSystem - aka Sharks - and we also talked about the competition.  I couldn't help bringing up VCE as I attended a VMUG recently where a VCE employee told the audience that they are the only true converged infrastructure and HP is a system integrator.

This is a really good discussion with LaMills and I'll share other interviews I have from Nth Symposium over the next few weeks.

Data protection: what can we learn from “Sharks” on efficiency and agility?

By Srikanth Venkataseshu, Worldwide Solutions Marketing Manager, Backup Recovery and Archive Solutions, HP Storage

Last December, HP announced HP ConvergedSystemshark.jpg – a purpose-built system with integrated servers, network and storage wrapped with a choice of hypervisors and automation tools to accelerate time-to-deployment of virtualized applications. Naturally, HP ConvergedSystem was code named “Sharks” – symbolizing agility, efficiency and speed.

Advancements in hypervisors and the arrival of ConvergedSystem have made it extremely easy to rapidly deploy virtualized applications. While organizations have embraced virtualized workloads, estimates indicate that only 50% of enterprises have their data protection strategy aligned with virtualization objectives. To address this gap, we created HP Data Protection Solutions for HP ConvergedSystem – a unified technology stack based on HP StoreOnce Backup (disk based deduplication and backup) and HP Data Protector backup software. Let’s talk more about this data protection aspect.

A bit more on the ConvergedSystem 300 and 700

My last post, I had a podcast I did at VMware Partner Exchange giving a 30,000 foot view of the HP ConvergedSystem.  In this post, I'll come down a bit from the stratosphere and give you a bit more detail about a couple of the products in the portfolio.  The product managers for the ConvergedSystem 300 and 700 were in the booth and I have a couple of videos talking to them. Let's start with the entry level ConvergedSystem 300.

ConvergedSystem 300

Here's the description I found on an hp.com page:  If you have 50-300 VMs, the ConvergedSystem 300 is a fit — built on modular, standards-based infrastructure blocks that help reduce initial acquisition costs. It will arrive at your site pre-configured and pre-tested, ready to run. Even better, we’ll quote and configure your system in 20 minutes, move it to production in 20 days, and lower entry price by 25% so you can use it everywhere.*
