Mapping the Cape 2 Cape Challenge

CarTeaserJ.jpgWhile visiting HP Discover in Barcelona last month, I was able to meet up with intrepid adventurer, Rainer Zietlow,
and the VW Touareg that was central to the latest “Extreme Testing” project for HP Storage Media.
In September 2014, Rainer and his team were attempting a new world record for long distance driving: from Nordkapp in Norway to Cape Agulhas, the southernmost point of Africa, in the shortest possible time. The route took them through 19 countries: Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Hungary, Serbia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Let’s travel along!

Interleave Archival Media Testing for LTO-6 Ultrium Data Cartridges

By Andrew Dodd, WW Marketing Communications Manager, HP Storage Media

Head3_DSC7470.jpgNot just one extra mile, but hundreds

You probably know that some of the world’s biggest companies use HP StoreEver Tape as a major component of their archiving and long-term asset preservation strategy. This archiving role means the traditional usage model for HP tape media has changed. And consequently, how HP tests its LTO media for performance and reliability needs to change also.

Where is tape media headed?

We’re more than eighteen months into the life of LTO-6 Ultrium, the newest version of the most successful tape backup and archiving format in existence. More than 900,000 HP LTO-6 cartridges have been sold to date, to add to the 73 million HP Metal Particle Ultrium cartridges shipped to customers since the format was launched in 2000. For that reason, LTO-6 has already surpassed its predecessor, LTO-5, in terms of adoption rates. That said, now seems like a good moment, therefore, to look at these trends in more detail and consider what the future may hold for tape media.

HP TechCast - lets talk tape storage!

A few weeks ago, Jeffery Powers (@Geekazine) and I did a live HP TechCast with our special guest Jason Buffington, Sr Analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group. Unfortunately, I forgot to hit the "record" button. It was a fantastic webcast and I didn't record it!

Fortunately Jason was able to join Jeffery and me along with HP LTO expert Bob Conway and we did a redo. We all thought the second go at it was a far better webcast after we got another chance at it.

More on HP StoreEver LTO-6

My blog post earlier today was an overview of our HP StoreEver Tape Storage announcement today.  I want to add to that an HP Storage ChalkTalk I have focusing on HP StoreEver LTO-6.  I hope you find these ChalkTalks useful - I have a good time making them (call me a geek!). Here's the LTO-6 ChalkTalk.

There's also a great announcement website where you can find a lot more content on HP StoreEver Tape Storage - you can find it at www.hp.com/go/storage/nextera.
