HP StorageWorks Tech Day: Session 7, P2000

 By Calvin Zito, aka @HPStorageGuy

Time for another video from our StorageWorks Tech Day.  Wow, has it really already been four weeks since we did our Tech Day?  Today's video is the HP StorageWorks P2000 G3 MSA session with Norman Morales.  The discussion in this session was very interactive and lots of questions from the bloggers.  Norman talked about what's new with the P2000 and covered a lot of ground in this 25 minute session.

HP StorageWorks Tech Day: Touring the labs

 By Calvin Zito, aka @HPStorageGuy

During our Tech Day at the end of March, we took a tour of three different labs at our Houston campus.  First of up is the event lab, timely as Chris Hornauer talked about getting equipment ready for Storage Networking World and the National Association of Broadcasters, both happening this week.  The other interesting thing is a closer look at the HP StorageWorks MDS600 - Chris pulls out the enclosure to show the drives and you'll get a look at the mechanism that allows the enclosure to slide out of the rack.  The MDS600 gives you shared storage at the price of direct attached storage.  I think a deeper dive on it is warranted here on the blog.  Here's that video:

The next stop was the Enterprise Backup Solutions Lab.  This is the lab where we test our backup hardware (HP tape storage and virtual tape systems like the D2D Backup System and Virtual Library System) with leading ISV backup software, including our own HP Data Protector.  Phil Lang mentioned the EBS compatibility matrix - it's one of the most downloaded pieces of content on hp.com.  If you want to take a look, you can click here

The last stop was Integrated Systems Test: Automated Test and Verification Lab.  There's a lot of interesting stuff here:

    • David Sheffield (you can call him Sheff) was our host here - you can tell he loves his job!  The bloggers were also interested at how "clean" an environment this test lab was - not your typical lab that has pieces/parts of systems all over.

    • The bloggers were very interested in how we collect data from our array controllers in the test lab (you'll see the "diving board" that is used to grab data off a controller).

Last time, if you have any issues with the embedded video, click here.

There are still more videos to come from the StorageWorks Tech Day  and I'll post them over the next several days.  A special thanks to all of the guys in Houston (and Yvette!!!) that helped make the lab tours possible.

Today's announcement podcast part 1: P2000 G3 MSA

 By Calvin Zito, aka @HPStorageGuy

Today we announced a couple of updates to our StorageWorks array family.  Here's a quick summary:

    • The HP StorageWorks P4000 G2 SAN Solution - as you'll hear in tomorrow's podcast, there are a ton of enhancements here.  A couple of the very timely ones are support for parity protected Network RAID, Unified (block and file-based) NAS Gateway, the new Best Practices Analyzer, and lower cost mid-line SAS drive support.  To get those details, check out tomorrow's podcast.

    • The HP StorageWorks P2000 G3 MSA - this product was formerly called the MSA2000.  You may have noticed some slight tweaking of our product names - this is an effort to have a simpler, more consistent product naming across our portfolio.  But that's not the big news here.  In today's podcast, you'll hear about the new iSCSI and 8Gb Fibre Channel combo controller, local replication (up to 64 snapshots) that is included with the P2000, and new remote replication functionality.

So with that high level overview, today's podcast will focus on the P2000.  I'm talking to Charles Vallhonrat.  Charles has been on the MSA team for as long as I can remember and is managing the marketing team.  Today, we talk about the what's new with the MSA, including it's new name, the P2000.
