Delivering Software-Defined Storage to the masses—for free

HP_StoreVirtual_VSA3.jpgHappy New Year! I know it’s November, but at HP, November marks the start of a new fiscal year, new opportunities and new program rollouts. It’s exciting! Better yet, I get to announce to you a new program that is aimed at deploying the new style of IT through the extension of Software-Defined Storage into virtualized environments.

Here’s the big news: Effective November 1, 2013, a variety of ProLiant Gen8 server models now come with a free 1TB license for StoreVirtual VSA software.

What this means is if you purchase one of the following ProLiant Gen8 rack, tower, or blade servers you can go and download the StoreVirtual VSA software and a 1TB capacity license for free. Servers include: BL420c, BL460c, BL465c, BL660c, DL320e Gen8 v2, DL360p, DL380p, DL385p, DL560, and ML350p

HP Tech Talk features new HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8

mza_599987174910224137_170x170-75.jpgBack in May I told you about our new HP Tech Talk - a weekly webcast with Andy McCaskey from SDRnews.  It's a show that focuses on defining the new style of IT and covers topics like storage, servers, networking, and cloud.  In fact, I was on a show Andy recorded today with Dan Molina, CTO of Nth Generation.  That show should be out early next week.

Today I wanted to point you to the latest HP Tech Talk that covers the topic of the new HP ProLiant MicroServer Gen8.  We announced this little guy at our HP Discover press conference.  Andy talks with Greg Starks from our ProLiant team and Greg shares some great insights about the new MicroServer.

This was the 10th show and if you want to check the others out, got to Andy's HP Tech Talk page on

HP 3PAR gets a boost with SSD

3PAR small.jpegToday we made a couple of announcements focused on solid state technology.  There are two pieces of the announcement - one focused on HP 3PAR and the other on HP ProLiant Gen8.  We announced an all-solid state drive (SSD) configuration for 3PAR.  We also announced HP Smart Cache for the HP ProLiant Gen8 servers.  It's server-based caching to accelerate performance.  Check out the blog post to get the details.  There's also a podcast you can listen to.

What's new with iLO

AHS-4_Capture.pngLast week I had a blog post that included ProLiant Gen8 teardown videos.  About 5 minutes after filming those videos I recorded a podcast with Adrian Kasbergen to learn about what is new with iLO Management Engine. As a storage guy, I really appreciated the information as it helped me to better understand the innovations built into ProLiant Gen8 that help make deploying, managing, and supporting our servers even easier.

Adrian walked me through four areas of where HP has brought some significant new features to iLO.  The areas we talked about are:

  1. Intelligent Provisioning
  2. Agentless management
  3. Active health system (shown in the screen shot)
  4. Remote support

HP ProLiant Gen8 teardown videos

My colleagues on the ProLiant team have a Gen8 Tech Day (for bloggers) in Houston. I'm jealous that I can't be there but I couldn't make this one because it's my daughter's 17th birthday - priorities!  If you want to see what they have going on at the Gen8 Tech Day, they have a website to connect with the conversation. I also see that Mike Letschin is a blogging machine and has a few blog posts from the Gen8 Tech Day.  He's also posted some pictures of a Gen8 teardown.  I also just noticed a blog post from Matt Vogt he titled HP Gen8: Smarter hardware.

There's more to see in my blog post so be sure to click over to the article.
