Enhancements to HP StoreOnce announced at HP Discover

The last few days at Discover were incredibly busy.  I think I was involved in creating 6 videos and a couple of podcasts.  I didn't get to tell you about the news with HP StoreOnce so while I have a short layover at SFO on my way home from Frankfurt, here are a couple of videos that give you the story.

Storage strategy focus with HP Storage chief and Intel

P1100287sm.jpgI have two things to share with you today.  In our Blogger Lounge at HP Discover, the invited bloggers have many opportunities to hear from HP executives and technical experts in our "coffee talks".  We held a coffee talk with the David Scott, Sr. VP and GM of HP Storage and Milan Shetti, CTO of HP Storage.  David and Milan spent about an hour with the bloggers answering their questions.

HP StoreOnce B6200 high availability podcast

Moon1 sm.jpgOne of the big announcements HP had at HP Discover was the new StoreOnce B6200.  I've had a few blog posts talking about the StoreOnce announcement and if you haven't checked them out, I'd highly encourage you to do that.  I think the advances we've made with the product over the last couple of years should make it a product on the top of anyone's enterprise-class disk-based backup solution list.

Today I have a podcast focusing on the high availability features built into the B6200, the most unique of which is Autonomic Failover.  As I understand it, the market leader EMC Data Domain does have a dual controller appliance but if a controller fails, the backup fails.  As you'll hear in the podcast, the B6200 can failover backup jobs to another node in the B6200.

I also got this cool picture of the moon tonight - but you'll have to go to the blog post to get that story and to hear or download the podcast.

StoreOnce and EMC Data Domain performance flap

In today's post, I want to address the flap that EMC created last week questioning whether or not the HP StoreOnce B6200 is a single system.  Here's a podcast of my thoughts here (which you can also read by clicking through to the blog post).

HP Labs talks StoreOnce and more

Last week at HP Discover we announced enhancements to our HP StoreOnce family.  We first announced StoreOnce deduplication - based on technology from HP Labs - at our HP event in Las Vegas two years ago.  We've been on a continuing push to deliver on our strategy of a single deduplication technology across the enterprise.

I remembered that in June 2010 I did a podcast with Mark Lillibridge - Mark is a Principal Research Scientist with HP Labs and he talked about some of the software innovations from HP Labs that are in StoreOnce.  The podcast was discarded when we moved to a new hosting platform but luckily, I'm a pack rat and was able to find this and pull it out of the archives.  Here's the discussion I had with Mark in my ATSB #23 podcast (from June 2010).

I have another podcast to share today - in it I talk to Steve Johnson about some of the challenges that existed with deduplication and how HP StoreOnce is addressing them.

Backup and Recover podcast with Jason Buffington

I literally just landed back home from HP Discover and wanted to get you this podcast I did with ESG Senior Analyst Jason Buffington.  Jason was at HP Discover and I had a short chat with him about the state of backup and recovery and of course we touched on HP StoreOnce Catalyst.

Here's the podcast:

HP StoreOnce, 3PAR and SSD videos from HP Discover

I'm ready to checkout of the Palazzo and fly home from HP Discover but wanted to get you this blog post before I go.  My colleague Brad Parks and I did a series of three videos while we were in the Bloggers' Lounge at the event and we covered three topics:

  • HP StoreOnce and StoreOnce Catalyst
  • HP 3PAR and Virtual Connect with Flat SAN technology
  • Technology discussion around Solid State Drives (SSD)

We wanted these videos to be short and to the point and I think we hit the mark.  Here's one of the videos on SSD technology - to see the others, go to the blog post.

More on HP StoreOnce Catalyst

Early today we announced enhancements to our HP StoreOnce family.  I wanted to share with you a short video that shows the HP StoreOnce B6200 and a podcast that goes a big deeper on exactly what StoreOnce Catalyst is.  Here's the overview video.

To listen or download the podcast, you'll have to go to the blog post.
