Soccer_Image.jpegIn Italy, the most popular sport is soccer. Everyone follows the championships. Even if you’re not that interested, it’s impossible to avoid the activity that surrounds them—and this includes the Monday coach. This is when you go to any office water cooler or other gathering spot on a Monday during soccer season and everybody there seems to think that they can do a better job than any of the real coaches. (If you are a U.S. football fan, you might recognize this common phenomenon as the Monday morning quarterback!)

Data availability reminds me of these endless discussions. Everyone thinks they have the perfect plan to solve any availability problem, and they refuse to even look at other ideas. When it comes to protecting data, however, the problem is that everyone is correct AND wrong at the same time! Let me explain...

HP Storage and Veeam integration demo

It's BURA Sunday and normally I have my team of experts doing these posts on Sunday but this week, they needed a break. The timing was perfect because I just finished editing a video demo that I did when I was at VeeamOn a few weeks ago.

The demo shows the integration between HP Storage - StoreVirtual, 3PAR StoreServ, StoreOnce, and StoreEver - to use snapshots for high availability, backup and archive.  Here's a summary of that:

  • Instant recovery from StoreVirtual and 3PAR of virtual machines, files and more
  • Backup to disk and offsite replication (for disaster recovery) to StoreOnce
  • Archive backup to StoreEver tape for longer term retention.

John DeFrees from my Technical Marketing team walks me through the demo and explains the integration points.

News from VeeamOn: Veeam Endpoint Backup Free

Ratmir and me.jpgA few weeks ago I shared a podcast with you that I did with my friend Rick Vanover. Rick is a technical evangelist at Veeam and I've known him for several years, from the beginning of my time blogging here on ATSB.

One of the things Rick and I talked about was VeeamOn, the inaugural Veeam customer event.  Today I was able to attend a briefing and now that Veeam has made the public announcement, I wanted to share it with you.

NOTE: image is me with Veeam CEO Ratmir Timashev.

What did Veeam announce?

Veeam announced Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE. It's a standalone solution for users to back up Windows-based clients to either hard drives, a NAS share or an existing Veeam backup repository. It also includes a tool to create a bootable thumb drive. With Veeam Endpoint Backup FREE, users will be able to do bare-metal restores, volume-level restores or a file-level restore.

During the briefing, we were told that it will support Windows 7 and later as well as Windows Server 2007 and later. The initial product will not support phones, tablets, Android OS or iOS.  Whether that's something Veeam does in the future, we'll see.

Customers Share Their Secrets: Helsingør Kommune

I've had a pretty amazing year with incredible trips to South Africa and Europe. My management has been very accommodating to me traveling as long as I can combine activities. So when the chance to speak at the Denmark VMUG over the summer came up, my manager said yes but combine some other things with the trip.

The city of Helsingør, known as Helsingør Kommune, is an HP 3PAR StoreServ customer and they were willing to do a video with me - so check box for my manager.  We spent a great day in Helsingør and I really enjoyed meeting Brian Hansen and talking to him about his environment.  They are a VMware environment and had recently replaced an HP EVA. As you'll hear Brian talk about, they have a second site for disaster recovery that is still an EVA and will be updated with a 3PAR some time soon.  Brian also discusses their backup environment that is based on Veeam. Here's the video with Brian.

Focusing on Backup - with a podcast and video interview

I've had a busy week but want to cap it off by giving you a really good podcast and video that I've done over the last few weeks. And while it's not BURA Sunday, I am on the topic of backup and recovery with the podcast and video.  The podcast is with Rick Vanover from Veeam, so go to the full blog post to get that.

While at Nth Symposium, there was a really good keynote from Richard Tengdin from Nth where he gave some great advice about keeping your backup modernized.  Nth was kind enough to give me a booth in the expo area and I did an interview with Richard there.  Here's the interview.

The BURA team here has been doing a great job with their BURA Sunday blog posts so be sure to check out their blogs.  It really is great having a team of people helping with great information on the blog.
