Virtualization and HP 3PAR
I was searching YouTube - actually, I got a Google Alert and found this YouTube video from Paul Haverfield. Paul is a Principle Technologist for HP Storage in Asia Pacific and was a guest on an ATSB podcast a bit more than a year ago when he helped me understand the HP 3PAR SPC-1 results. This YouTube video I found is a really good discussion talking about virtualization (or as Paul spells it "virtualisation") and the architecture of HP 3PAR StoreServ and is a good follow-up to the ChalkTalk series I started last week. The video is a bit more than 20 minutes long but is well worth your time if you want to learn more about the HP 3PAR StoreServ portfolio.
Which 5 IT areas look to prosper in 2013?
By Andre Carpenter, senior solutions architect
Here’s to 2013! It’s a very exciting time to be in IT—and especially in the storage, cloud and virtualisation space. Last year saw a massive shift in the IT landscape as CIOs really started to show interest in this thing we call cloud computing. More focus on how things can be done better and more cost effectively was one of the prominent drivers behind this surge in interest.
Looking into the crystal ball…
I’ve never deemed myself to be a fortune teller of any kind, but I guess in some wacky kind of way it is part of my role: possessing a grasp of what’s happening now and an ability to translate this and interpret the market to foretell what might be happening 6 months, 12 months, 18 months down the track. This is always a beneficial skill for any IT professional to have. This time of year, we see a number of predictions on market trends that appear to be obvious for 2013. Then there are some that may come as a surprise. So let’s take a look at some of the areas that I think will prosper.

Building storage for virtualization podcast from SNW
I ended my day at SNW on Monday attending a session by my colleague Michael Haag. Michael came to HP via 3PAR and is a Senior Solution Manager for Virtualization and works closely with partners like VMware, Microsoft, and Citrix. He talks a bit more about his role in our podcast.
His session was titled "Keys to building the right storage foundation for virtualization". In my podcast with Michael we hit some of the high points of his session like:
- Michael's three virtualization truths
- Storage challenges resulting from virtualization
- Keys to building the right storage foundation, including storage architecture considerations
During his session MIchael also mentioned that HP 3PAR Peer Motion (our storage federation software that I recently demoed on HP LeftHand) now supports VMware and we talked about that. Here's the podcast with Michael:
HP passes EMC as the storage virtualization brand leader
I learned at the end of last year that we had been named the "Storage Virtualization Brand Leader" by ITBrand Pulse. HP overtook EMC, the 2009 leader, to claim the top spot. How's that for breaking recorders!!!
HP Technology Chat with StorageWorks Execs
I sat down with two of our execs to talk about the state of storage technology and what HP is doing to address the storage market. There are three videos here to watch.

This is the third podcast in my series about virtualization. I talked with Jeremy Sherwood, VP of Sales and Operations from Opus Interactive about how they've used virtualization in the data center and specifically his experience with the P4000 SAN Solution (former HP LeftHand)
