CSR in Europe, Middle East and Africa

I asked my colleague Danica to share her impressions from the Europe Company of the Year final which was held in Cagliari. Thanks Danica for sharing this. Happy reading, Daniela.

You’ll probably know the feeling very well – you are coming to an event and you are happy to be back again. This was exactly my feeling when I joined my colleagues, Jeannette, Ulrike and Daniela, from the Education team within HP’s Office of Global Social innovation.  They were volunteering with me as members of the HP Jury at Junior Achievement - Young Enterprise’s( JA -YE) Europe Company of the Year competition in Cagliari, Sardinia this July.

We’ve been running the HP Responsible Business Competition in partnership with JA-YE for five years. Each year the competition includes two main awards: the HP Responsible Business Award and the Responsible Business Ideas Contest. The Responsible Business Competition is open to all students in JA-YE programs across Europe and this year 743 teams participated - almost twice as many as last year. Every school year, hundreds of HP employees work in schools as volunteers and teach young students how to establish responsible and sustainable businesses.

And do you know why I’m so glad to work with all these young people? Because I can see a lot of energy, enthusiasm and innovation.  I can also see how HP is making difference. Every year, as a result of HP’s programs and the fantastic work of HP employee volunteers, more and more JA-YE students all over Europe are thinking about social impact, environment, sustainability, diversity and inclusion when they develop their companies.  The HP  Responsible Business Ideas Award was presented this year to a team from Russia, ‘Let’s help the Cedar Grove’, because they did an outstanding job at combining environmental education and sustainable development. The students had the idea of preserving an unprotected natural landmark near their town – a cedar grove - by organizing excursions for students and families. The students offered conservation activities and other entertaining and educational activities to raise awareness for the protection of the environment and a healthy way of living.

As usual, the work of the jury was very hard. We had to read 34 company reports , look at the stage presentations, visit the stands of all the companies and discuss their social responsibility ideas.

But it was worth the effort – we saw a lot of excellent presentations, innovative products and fantastic social responsibility ideas. At the end we judges had a hard time selecting the winner!

But we were happy to present the HP Responsible Business Award to Rewined”, a company from Malta, because we liked their concept for a sustainable and responsible company. This student company produces cheese plates from old wine bottles which would otherwise be scrapped. As the managing director of the company17 year old Andreas Borg Wirth said: “We were extremely pleased with this award, because to us, it was a confirmation that we had succeeded in carrying out one of our main goals. Being a responsible company entails taking what you have benefitted from your successes and sharing with the rest of society at large. In the brief nine months that Young Enterprise takes place in Malta, we underestimated the impact one small company can leave on society, but we are proud and glad to be the ones to leave our mark, and make a difference. We hope to have started a trend, and that more local companies will act in a responsible manner. Rewined is innovative in the way that we are reintroducing what was once thrown away, back onto our dining table. We have produced a revolutionary answer to a massive problem, being ignored by today's throwaway society. Rewined has attempted to involve all aspects of society; children, mothers, the environment. All attempts have been made to ensure that Rewined gives back in a considerable way.”

What a progressive view from a 17 year old student – a representative of the next generation of leaders. The list of positive experiences from Cagliari goes on - the Swiss student company Pno which utilized recycled material from bicycle inner tubes to produce  pen cases and covers for phones and gave jobs to disabled people in sheltered workshops; or the  German company, enerXchange focusing on energy savings and education about environmental issues or the innovative Italian company, Clean Beach Project,  that produced paper made from 100%  chlorine-free, locally-sourced algae.

The students are now enjoying their well-deserved holidays, but colleagues  in the Education team are already thinking about the new school year and how we can get HP volunteers involved in our JA-YE programs again.

128 HP volunteers gave their support to JA-YE across 10 European countries this year. I hope I have inspired some more of you to start thinking about how you too can make a difference ...!

Who says that the summer months are quiet? On July 15th we just hosted our first global webinar for HP LIFE. I asked my colleague Fanny to shortly summarise this achievement. Enjoy reading. Daniela.

This first global webinar for the new HP LIFE Program was a great success, due to 1) the HP LIFE program as program for education and training, 2) the introduction of fresh training tools, new content and innovative training management system and 3) the number of participants, integral part of the HP LIFE Program’s success.

First success attributed to the HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP LIFE) Program

The HP LIFE Program innovation lies in addressing the educational needs of students, regardless of their backgrounds, locations or circumstances, through face-to-face training and online tools!

Second success attributed to MEA-I recent developments for LIFE Curriculum,  Online Method and Training Management System

-           LIFE Curriculum

This is a fantastic reach out for the first global webinar. HP LIFE Team is really delighted by the enthusiasm and the dedication of LIFE network.

As a matter of fact, here some feedback, received right after the webinar.

GET-IT/MAP Master Training in Kiev

by Daniela.Opp on 07-21-2010 01:53 PM - last edited on 07-21-2010 01:53 PM

Last month, Ana from MEA-I gave a master training course in Kiev. I asked her to summarise her impressions. Happy reading, Daniela

A joint HP GET-IT and MAP Master Training was held in Kiev, Ukraine, between June 21-25.  As the Master Trainer teaching the course, I was extremely impressed with the level and dedication of the MAP and GET-IT trainers who attended.  It’s great to know that the MAP and GET-IT networks are growing in Russia and the Ukraine and that both these countries will now have a group of such excellent Master Trainers of their own!

Nine trainers participated in total; three from the Ukraine, five from Russia, and one from Serbia.  They each had to give a presentation on a theoretical aspect of the MAP/GET-IT methodology and to present one topic from the curriculum to the rest of the group.  They did lots of role-playing activities and provided feedback to each other on their presentations – all at a really impressive level.

The training was held at the HP GET-IT Center in Kiev which was opened in collaboration with ORT Russia at the ORT Technology Lyceum.  We had the chance to visit the whole complex and talk with some of the teachers.  The Lyceum seems to be an extremely reputable school in Kiev, and we were all amazed at the level of the content taught to the students, the pace, the amount of work they are expected to do, and at the results too!

In the end, it wasn’t just the work aspect that was so great, what was also wonderful was the location of the training – Kiev. We had the opportunity to visit the city on the Wednesday and Friday afternoons, going on a guided tour of the main sites, and taking a boat ride on the broad and breathtaking Dniepr River.

After the training, I had the opportunity to visit the other two HP GET-IT  centers in the Ukraine – in Lvov and Slavutich.

Slavutich is a small town located 50km from Chernobyl and it's where all the 3,000 people who still work at the Chernobyl station (that will still take 30 years to shut down!) live.  The people we met at the center were talking a lot about the growth of small businesses in their town and how that's all changing at the moment.  This is why they thought the HP GET-IT Program was particularly relevant to their community.  The people there were extremely professional and the center just beautiful!

The center in Lvov was also extremely active, and the people I met were full of enthusiasm for the program.  That center is based at the Jewish community center in Lvov.  Many different cultural and educational activities are held there and the whole place seemed really alive somehow!  There I also had the chance to meet three students (about 20 yrs old) who'd followed the GET-IT course.  This was a true delight.  One of them didn't know how to use a computer at all before she attended the course, another one is a computer science student but said he didn't know how to do simple, practical things such as Googlegroups and Microsoft Outlook, even though he knows how to program (he'd also already registered his own business and showed us the company certificate he'd got!), and another also said the course was really useful for him – he had dreams of a starting a design company one day.

I’d like to thank ORT Russia for their excellent organization of the course, and all the participants – many of whom have now already become GET-IT and MAP Master Trainers! – for their hard work, enthusiasm, and friendship.  It’s weeks like these that make this program what it is!

I’d like to share some more details about the HP EdTech Innovators Award that Jeannette mentioned in her recent blog entry about HP’s latest education initiatives.

The Award aims to recognize and support education institutions that do an outstanding job at using technology in an innovative way, both inside and outside the classroom. Any primary, secondary or tertiary education institution or not-for- profit organizations actively using technology in education can apply if they are based in one of the 54 eligible countries listed below.

If you think you’re eligible, then you’ve got until June 30, 2010 to apply to be considered for one of 10 Awards. Each winners will receive a classroom bundle of 20 HP tablet PCs, including accessories worth approximately USD 40,000 (list price).  You’ll also be able to attend training sessions, best practice sharing opportunities and you’ll be invited to the HP Education Conference. If you’re interested, please visit www.hp.com/go/edtech where you will find further instructions and a template for your proposal.

HP launched this Award with our partner the New Media Consortium as we believe that there are many education institutions that are already using emerging technologies in the classroom in ways that are fundamentally changing how teachers teach and students learn. However, we also feel that there are still too many excellent ideas out there that don’t get the kind of exposure and support that could lead to their further development and implementation. We’d like to use the EdTech Award to try to change that, to give outstanding education institutions more visibility for their successful programs and to help facilitate best practice sharing.  We believe that sharing the stories of these innovators could produce a ripple effect with the potential to bring innovative ideas to mainstream education.

We’ve already received some project submissions.   You can view these and comment on them by visiting  http://hp.brightidea.com/edtech.  Have a look at this early collection of best practice summaries and vote for your favorite!

The Microenterprise Acceleration Programme won the NMC Award!

by Daniela.Opp on 06-24-2010 12:26 PM - last edited on 06-24-2010 12:58 PM

I have invited Jelena Godjevac, CEO of the Microenterprise Acceleration Programme (which HP is a gold-sponsor of), to share the latest news on the programme with you I have to say, congratulations Jelena and team - HP is very proud of you!

The NMC Summer Conference, held this year at the University of Southern California, is an event dedicated to exploring and promoting innovative applications of technology for teaching, learning, and creative inquiry.

Every year, since 1993, the Conference has been held at different US universities. They have been the meeting place for members of university faculty specialising in new media, management personnel, and technology specialists working at higher education institutions.

This year's Conference is focusing on four particular tracks, namely Emerging Technologies, New Media and Learning, New Media and Leadership, and Tools and Techniques.

MEA-I,  HP’s partner for the deployment of the HP LIFE programme, was showcasing its activities in the sphere of new media and learning within its Interactives and Posters sessions. MEA-I presented its new developments including its new LIFE Curriculum, which is currently under development, its new LIFE Blended Training of Trainers platform, and its IT-for-entrepreneurship serious games.

A panel of anonymous judges examined 15 projects and decided to award MEA-I with the Judges’ choice. The criteria for this award included:

  • Visual impact
  • Educational relevance
  • Supporting materials
  • Creativity

MEA-I showed its puzzle for the enterpreneurship education: LIFE curriculum, Serious games, Online Training of Trainers and Smart Tools – a training management system. The picture was completed by a vision to create a LIFE portal for the community of trainers and students. MEA-I received compliments for its incredible vision.

Cheers, Jelena
