Tips on Applying to HP

First, let’s talk about how to find out what jobs are open at HP.  What’s the primary source of job postings for HP jobs?  Our website.  If a job is open to external applications, you’ll find it at www.hp.com/go/jobs.  You will find jobs all over the world on this single site.

Friends have told me that they assume if they see one or many of our jobs on another job board, that must be the whole list of what we’ve got open.  That’s not the case.

Tip#1:  While we do post some of our jobs on job boards and other places to increase visibility to some of our open positions, there are many more jobs available on our website than you’ll find anywhere else.

Next, how to get your resume into HP.

There are a few ways to get your resume into HP.  The broadest way is to submit your profile in general.  If the right position for you isn’t showing on the website at the time you’re looking, this is a great way to at least let us know who you are, and it gives us insight into your experience.

The more direct way to apply is to submit an application to each individual position that meets your qualifications and interests.

Tip #2:  Here’s a really important piece of advice – apply to each position that is a strong match for your experience and interests.  Direct experience is usually best.  As a hiring manager, I see a lot of resumes of people who have a lot of great potential, but no experience in the requirements of the job.  Keep in mind that proven experience is typically a requirement.  At the university/entry level, internships are a great way to gain practical experience.

Tip #3:  For the positions that are a great match for you, it’s ok to apply to more than one of them.  While we strive to match candidates across jobs, your interest in one position may not automatically transfer over to interest in another position.  The best way to use this approach is to be selective – posting on everything if your qualifications are a big stretch for that kind of job isn’t really going to help.  We run a lean recruiting machine, so more candidates isn’t better – you can help us by limiting your postings to those positions that are the best match.

Another great way to apply is through an employee referral.  People who are top talent usually know other people who are top talent, so I find that our employees are a great resource for calling those people to our attention.  If you know people who already work at HP, ask them to let us know about you, using the employee referral tool.

In the next post, I’ll share more on how to interpret the job postings, including finding out about locations of jobs, and information for recent university grads.

When clicking on the link you provided, we get an external server error.  Is there possibly another route?  I currently live in Conway, AR, and have extensive IT experience.

Hi Michelle, if you have trouble reaching the URL directly, you can go to www.hp.com, and there's a link to "jobs" at the bottom of our home page.

If anyone runs into an issue access the jobs website, please submit a Contact HP case via the feedback links on the bottom of the main website; that will help us track and fix quickly.

Thanks!

Hi,

If you go to www.hp.com and click on jobs at the bottom of the page, this is what shows up in the browser:

error '80004005'

/jobsathp/Includes/definition.asp, line 92

It's broken.

Can you fix it?

thanks!

It should be working, but if anyone runs into this please submit a Contact HP case via the feedback links on the bottom of the main website; that will help us track and fix quickly because it will be visible to the IT team.   THANKS

Ran into the identical problem. Cannot access the job area

A few people have run into error codes when accessing the job search system.  It seems to be pretty isolated, and the system hasn't actually been down.  The IT team is looking into a fix, but if this happens to you, the workaround so you can conduct your search is to delete cookies.

To do this, in Internet Explorer, go to Tools, then Internet Options, then look for "Delete Cookies".  Apply the change, then close out your browser windows entirely.  Launch the browswer and try your search again.  It should work.

Hi Roshan,

Immigration sponsorship is complex.  HP does offer sponsorship in many situations, but with immigration laws & requirements, and business needs around the world, ability to sponsor varies.  Many different factors go into those decisions.

As a mathematics professor, I use a Tablet PC in my classroom.  I have done workshops throughout the 3 campuses in my college and because of this, the use of Tablet PCs has increased dramatically.  In my department alone, there are now about 1/2 of us use HP Tablets.  Who can I contact about making this a career?  I would love to figure out a way to use my talents at HP to promote their Tablet PC technology.

Lizette Foley - Thank you for being a HP Tablet PC advocate! I work with educators around the world who are also finding great benefits from using tablet pcs and "digital ink" to support learning and instruction. My blog, http://www.hp.com/go/hied-blog is full of examples...

Specific to your interest in a job at HP to promote tablet pc technology, do you have any background in marketing or sales? Those are two potential career avenues to explore.

My particular niche, corporate philanthropy, is highly unusual and opportunities like this are rare. The work also requires an interesting mix of job skills such as program management, public speaking, social media writing, strategy development, and the ability to work effectively inside a large, complex corporation - and build bridges to the external world (in my case, educators).

Good luck to you in your pursuits...!

Best regards, Jim Vanides

Hello,

I'd love to do what you do.  My skills are very suited to this.  My talents are very broad.  Can you give me some tips on how you become a "corporate philanthropist?"

Thanks,

Lizette Foley

Hi Lizette, since your question is for Jim, I'm posting it over on his blog.

Thanks!

Stephanie
