Digital Signage on the Highway
One of the megatrends that we chat about is immersive visual displays and technologies. Circumstances recently had my family driving from Massachusetts to Florida on I-95. Being a technologist, we noted the prevalence of new, bright digital signage, right next to traditional bill boards.
As always, the disclaimer. The opinions expressed on this blog are mine and do not represent those of my employer.
Many of us have at some time recently have made a long drive. On this occasion, I really did notice the emergence of large scale digital signage. Given that at certain points in the journey, the digital signage really did lighten the night. The number of digital signage would suggest that it is of course main stream.
There were digital signage for healthcare that I found particularly interesting. The signage provided real time wait times in the emergency rooms near where we were driving. (The good news was that we did not need this). However, it was great that this type of information was available.
The detail and definition of the signage as well as the brightness caught my attention. The advertising and overall messages I was able to read despite rain and clouds. I really felt the need for coffee.
Some of the messages were of a public safety orientation as well, which was very useful.
Your point of view is truly of interest as well, how does your business leverage digital signage.
While there remains a significant amount of traditional bill boards and signs, the differentiation between old versus new was stunning. Truth be told, I still recall the signage.
I thought at first, that I would find large scale, high definition digital signage distracting. My experience was that I found it no more distracting that traditional bill boards along the highway.
As we discuss megatrends and the impact they have on our day to day lives and point of view, it is clear to me that digital signage is becoming of age. The large scale signage is a microcosm of the larger fabric. In every industry vertical- health care, retail, manufacturing, advertising, and others the unique applications are bound only by our creativity.
The trip was long enough that the trend was unmistakeable. I commenced to think at length on the various applications that could be leveraged in businesses.
As a media for communication, this will be an interesting megatrend to observe what I beleive will be rapid and agressive adoption.
