Go Cloud Native and Forget About Your Legacy Applications, Really?

Returning from the holidays, I came across an article titled “Applications and the Cloud: Time to Go Native.” In this blog for IT Business Edge, Arthur Cole states that in all likelihood cloud-native applications are going to assume the bulk of enterprise activity before the end of the decade. I agree with Cole that cloud-native applications are the future for new applications; but knowing the amount of existing apps available at companies, I do not believe his statement that the bulk of enterprise applications will become cloud native. Let me explain you why.

Migrating Apps? What you need to know first.

Regularly I am involved in estimating the effort required to migrate a large number of applications to the cloud. Certain application information is required in order to produce an execution plan and effort estimate.

The problem is I rarely have all the information required. To my utmost surprise, many companies only have partial information on their applications. In fact, the information needed is often scattered over a large amount of IT people and seldom centralized. To get applications where they need to be, there are a few crucial pieces of information I need to know.

DevOps and Cloud, two trends for the digital enterprise

IT technology plays an increasing role in business. Despite the resistance of some, IT will play an ever increasing role in enterprises. Rather than being slow to embrace trends, enterprises should think at how to take advantage of the digital world to transform their customer experience and facilitate the way they do business or create new products and services. Throughout this blog entry, I will refer to these approaches as the “solution” to be developed. It will be different for each enterprise, but the principles remain the same. As start-ups and enterprises go down the path of digitization, there are a couple elements that become obvious. Let’s review them.
