Windows Small Business Server 2011 family has been designed and priced for small businesses. It is an affordable server solution to help your customer’s business run more efficiently. It provides core functionality for: Networking, Server and PC Backup, Security, Advanced e-mail and calendar capabilities, Database and line-of-business support, Document and printer sharing and Remote Access. For more information please view our Coffee Coaching SBS Series.
Here we’ll discuss how we license and deploy SBS 2011 Premium Add-On and the added value. So let’s get started! The first thing you’ll notice is that as with Small Business Server 2008 Premium Edition, SBS 2011 Premium Add-On also contains Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard edition and SQL Server 2008 R2 for small business, which only works in the SBS domain. What’s different is that this is just an Add-On that can be installed in SBS 2011 Standard and Essentials editions; it does not contain the core SBS software.
If you are interested in this solution, you’ll have to install first the SBS 2011 Standard or Essentials system and then the Premium Add-On. The Add-On has several features which will add business value to your customers so they can be on the cutting edge of technology.
With the SBS 2011 Premium Add-On you get a discounted version of SQL standard that can be added to an SBS 2011 network (Essentials or Standard) at any time. Continuing the split licensing trend, it’s easy and cost-effective to add an existing SBS 2011 User, because you’ll only need to get a CAL for the database for the specific users who need access to it, making this option much more cost effective than some of the past scenarios.
As mentioned before the SBS 2011 Premium Add-On has a full version of Windows Server 2008 R2, with the ability to run Remote Desktop Services (RDS). The included version of SQL 2008 R2 allows you to shrink your database backup which is critical for databases meeting the narrow backup windows of today. In addition you are able to virtualize your environment with Hyper-V technologies, including failover capabilities and live migration capabilities. As you see, the Premium Add-On provides great business value for growing customer environments.
